"George had a quite large tumour on the top of his head that was growing slowly, and it was beginning to affect his quality of life," Dr Rich from the Lort Smith Animal Hospital said.

George's owner was given the choice between an operation or having the fish put to sleep.

"She was dedicated enough to give it a go," he said.

He added that the fish was kept alive by pumping oxygenated pond water through its gills.

Dr Rich described the 45-minute operation as "fiddly".

There's something fishy about that story. The doctor reckoned the operation codn't have gone any better and eel soon be back on his feet (if he had any),
£125 though, mind you the price of fish has gone up recently, I paid nearly 7 quid last week, though that included the chips, mushy peas and plastic fork, thankfully I was only buying the one as the wife prefers a jumbo sausage. There was a bit of a kerfuffle while I was in the chippy though, three fish got battered.

"Oh bloody hell, get him off! Get him off!"
