i've heard him talk about this and the story changes slightly over the years. When i first heard it they didn't ask for permission and sampled it from his old dansette record player in his squat in hyde, or something. LAtest I've hrad is they did ask for permission but then used a much bigger sample and ended up losing everything. The irony i suppose is that it isn't even the rolling stones as such, and even if it was it was from the period where alan klein, their supposed saviour, rather coolly obtained the rights to all their stuff**. I htink the delays in releasing all that stuff as remasters was due to conflict with the klein empire. I think Rich (bit of a gobshite nob if you ask me) is philosphical in that the single lead to major interest in the album and the follow up singles. I hithkn he's still a fairly well off person - condsidering they only had a couple of albums went major.
** though you'd have to blame andrew oldham for that as original manager who 'owned' it in the first place. Bill Wyman's book details all this stuff. Apparently when they got the prince wossname bloke in as new accountant and business adviser he worked out klein owed them about 18 million but to avoid lengthy legal percocess they accepted about 2m, mopst of which obviously went to mick n keef.
