Coldplay's new album

We know there is more to life than the music of the Bunnymen. Talk about those other bands here.

Is this the British thing (and American high school thing) where once a band is incredibly popular everyone has to shit on them?

It's more of a music snob thing. It is based on the premise that one is part of an elite group with special intelligence and discernment. Such a person will often be found lamenting how "stupid" everyone is, even in the face of their own lack of personal accomplishment. If the common masses love something, then it cannot be good, or else the premise is violated. In the parlance of these people "selling out" means "regular people like them now."

No its based on the fact that apart from their Glasto headline slot, they havnt done anything to justify their wealth and status. The current UK music scene is made up of numerous counterfeit skinny legged indie bands all wanting a career (£) over musical nous. And Coldplay are the Godfathers.Plus his(Martins) constant namedropping of influences makes me want to kill the twat.Who namedrops Coldplay as an influence? Hence anyone with taste in the UK laps up real foreign talent such as CSS and MGMT and actively detests what the conservative,sheep-like,supermarket consuming, franchise loving 'masses' prefer to buy in the way of music.Coldplay are no different to Elton John,George Michael,Bryan Adams etc etc.Dinner party, pleasant background music when the advacado is mixed with Don Perignon.Boring, boring, boring shite. And Mac is even worse for encouraging the bastards.

I wont be buying the new album.

I like them even though I never listen to the radio, pay attention to thehype, have very ecclectic and obscure taste in music and live in the US where, with the excpetion of their iphone commerical, they aren't on my radar.

I guess I actually just like their music.

Well, that sounds like good punishment. "Fling 'im in the avocado. That'll show 'im!"

Exhibit A.

Withahip, notice the supercilious dismissal of "conservative,sheep-like,supermarket consuming, franchise loving 'masses'." No doubt this person thinks he is better than these people he imagines, while also believing, paradoxically, that he is more open minded.

For this kind of person, it is all about who else likes the band, how much money the band has, how skinny their legs are, and other things like "namedropping".

The music itself actually takes a back seat to all of these more important considerations. When the music IS considered, it must, above all, not be "pleasant."

This attitude might be more understandable coming from someone who had himself done what it takes to make a go of it in the music business, or produced something of consequence in the field of his own particular calling. In general, however, we are lucky if such a person does not still live with his mother.

As it happens, I only know one Coldplay song, and when it came on the radio, I thought it was Sting.

So you're saying I have mis-characterized you, judged you without knowing the nuances of your actual experiences? Remember that next time you write off whole swaths off people as stupid sheep.

.........how do I explain........the supermarket Tesco's is colonising the UK into some kind of homgenous mass.......Coldplay are the archetypal, unit shifting band that this retail superpower want.People throw a cd into their trolley like a bagel-eat and throw the wrapping away.No longevity or thought.Just an impulse buy.Play for a day then bin.If you buy a cd of a band you buy art to invest time in it and the artist.Coldplay are the Tesco's of music and together with this distribution chain they will make millions. It just marketing over substance.Shallow,shallow,shallow.The band had the worst style ever when they hit the scene(check out Shiver vid) but were moulded by stylists into what they are now. They make 'pleasant' music like Westlife. The VU they aint.Avoid.

You criticize the the band for being "moulded by stylists", but then you hold up VU as some kind of antithesis?

I've got news for you, The VU were completely "moulded" by a stylist name Andy Warhol. They were as made up as Frankie Goes to Hollywood.

So, a band has to be VU for you to like them? They are, of course, the archetypical favorite of music snobs, having the most important attribute of obscurity during their music career, thereby avoiding the contamination of being listened to by commoners.

Coldplay may well suck, but your criticism of them continues to be nothing but who buys them, and where, and how, and for what reason, and a place called "Tesco's." I hope, for your sake, that "Tesco's" never sells VU records, because then you will be in quite a pickle as to what your opinion should be.
