Signed CDs?

I was in London back in 1986 when the Grey CD came out. I bought two at Virgin Mega and took the tube back to Heathrow. It wasn't until I was on the flight when I opened the CDs just to check them out.

I found both CDs had been signed by the band. Not all of the band members but at least Will, Pete and Les.

I have always wondered why these were signed. Anyone have any ideas? I have loved this band since 1980, flew to London in 86 to see them and have seen them stateside another 4 or 5 times.

Anyway, any information about these signed CDs would be appreciated.

To answer your question, I don't know really. My guess is that there was an in-store appearance and after signing them they shrink wrapped them again.

Are you sure you bought the CD's in Virgin and not HMV on Oxford Street...... When the grey album was released in the UK the band played a short set on the HMV roof. And also done a short signing session, no doubt HMV got the band to sign copies whilst the waited to perform and do the signing session. Maybe some signed copies found there way into the cd racks .......

It's only a theory !!!!!

You know, it could have been at HMV. But hell it was over 20 years ago so I am not really sure. I have been in London 20 or 30 times so I really can not remember.

But it is cool having their autographs I guess.......

When exactly was the Grey Album released on compact disc? Its vinyl release was 1987. I don't remember buying it on CD for some time after that. I know the singles (Lips and Bedbugs) were released as promo cd's in a timely manner, however.

It was released on CD by Warner in the UK and by Sire in the US at the same time the LP was released.

The first CD came out in 1982. By 1988 CD production had surpassed LP production.

I don't think I owned a CD player until 1992 myself.

My first CD was the Bunnymen's "New Live and Rare" and then I had to buy a CD player.

I was lucky enough back in 1986 to find a way to work for the US State Department. My first trip was to West Berlin. While there I went walking down the Kudamm and found a record store. The FIRST thing I looked for was Bunnymen stuff.

Found three CD's of the Bunnymen. Bought all three. Cost a small bit of money at the time. And I didn't even own a CD player. But I had to have them on CDs.

When I got back stateside, I went out and bought my first CD player JUST for these CDs.

On my long stop in London, about 8 weeks, I spent all of my weekends going to record stores. I bought everything I could lay my hands on about the Bunnymen. Posters, buttons, singles, LPs, CDs.. you name it. My carryon for the plane ride home were two bags of Bunnymen stuff......

They are so underappreciated here in the states it makes me sick...... but who said we Americans have taste in Music? We did give the world Madonna for crying out loud!

I said we did!

Yes, we gave the world Madonna-- and they loved it. We also gave them Jazz, Rock & Roll, Bluegrass, Motown, R&B etc. etc. etc.

I also was fortunate enough to visit Berlin (both sides) in '82. It was a huge experience for me. I didn't know anything about the Bunnymen, though. The kids I stayed with gave me a cassette of what was called "Neue Deutsche Welle" and it contained some pretty hilarious stuff. (My favorite was a song called "Fred vom Jupiter.")
