It was such a great night. I went with my son and two of my homies and it was pretty cool being on a guest list and getting all access passes. We got there half convinced we were gonna be laughed out of the building. Jar of Darkness? What the fuck is that? Hey everybody come here and look at these idiots!" But instead we received handwritten passes and were escorted into the venue. Once we got in there we headed over to the Constellation Room where they'd be performing and I wasn't sure how things would go down so my friend went to the merch booth and told them I was the Jar of Hatred winner and their tour manager came and was super cool and we laughed at the absurdity of the auction and the jar and everything. So we got all access wrist bands and he took us up to a small room where King Khan and BBQ were hanging out with their friends and they could not have been nicer. They gave us beer out their fridge and we talked for about 15 minutes. They explained they thought it would be fun for someone and thanked me for understanding what they were about. They have a very subversive sense of humor in all they do and they appreciated that fact that I was into that. When they brought the jar the contents had leaked due to the altitude pressure while flying so BBQ was like I was gonna say to never open this but uh good luck! We took a picture and I thanked them for the jar and the opportunity to take part and we left. It was perfect. Right before things had a chance to turn awkward! I cant express how at ease they made us feel. They were really nice.
The show was incredible. I've never gone to a show where the two opening bands were awesome as well. The first was Peach Kelli Pop, a garage band that consisted five woman dressed like they were grandmothers playing up tempo, Ramones inspired garage rock. The songs were catchy and the rocked out. The banter was hilarious and the keyboardist handed out granola bars telling the audience they needed to gain weight because winter was almost here.
The second band the Milk Lines was hard to pin down musically but their songs were catchy but had an air of sadness about them. Some of the songs were incredibly beautiful. It's really hard for me to describe.
KKBBQ came on and it was just so awesome. Despite being just a two man band they have a full sound. They started off with Fish Fight which got the crowd moving despite our advanced age. They played a great setlist that included some of their more hardcore numbers which are firmly rooted in a catchy tune and silly lyrics (taste buds on my nuts, so I can taste up inside your butt) but my favorite are their love songs and when they sing about love and loss they handle their shit. I think the highlight was "Why Don't You Lie" which had an edgy, angrier tone than the studio version. When they ended the show they gave me a shout out and thanked me again for understanding what the Jar of Hatred was about and then afterwards they hung out and took pictures and autographed stuff for the fans. It was such an inspiring night. My son has been playing the drums for about two years now and he was blown away how you could create so much with so little and these guys don't make a killing doing this so it was inspiring to me to see these dudes about my age still killing it and doing what they loved and giving it their all out on the stage. So fucking awesome.
With the Force as his ally he did battle with the Dark Lord. And he showed the measure of a true Jedi at a place called "The Death Star" where hope for the Galaxy was reborn. May all who struggle against tyranny hold his memory in their hearts
