WAYGTDWYL and Rust B sides

Postby crystal89 » Wed Jul 23, 2014 5:02 am

Here's an interesting one.

Whilst the album is indeed very good, I can't help but wonder if a few songs were switched out or around then it would be even better, and more Bunnymen.

I'd also like to know about the Rust b-sides, I've got them but was wondering if Les is involved in them as the Bass on some songs sounds very much like him, but I am no expert.

My track list for the album would be this.

1. Rust
2. Get In The Car
3. The Fish Hook Girl
4. Baby Rain
5. WAYGTWYL
6. Lost On You
7. Beyond The Green
8. See the Horizon
9. Sense of Life
10. Fools Like Us

what's yours?

My love of that album is no secret. WAYGTDWYL charted better than most think at #21, the highest position of any Bunnymen release since Evergreen.
Fish Hook Girl definitely should have been on that album. I think leading with the title track was a mistake too. Rust or Get In The Car would have been a better choice IMO.

Fools Like Us is the only track with Les. I believe that song was initially recorded for a soundtrack.

I agree with all of that!

Especially that the title track was the wrong song to open the album, Rust would've been much better as you say.

A missed opportunity not putting fish hook girl on there though.

Just re-read your thing on Les...the b-sides, I dunno if Les is on them or not. Fools Like Us came out on the soundtrack Martha Meet Frank Daniel And Laurence in 1998 so it seems like it was recorded well before they worked on WAYGTDWYL but on the other hand I'm not sure when the B-sides were recorded and they don't list musicians on the liner notes....hmmm, a mystery to solve.

Disagree...... like the album as it is and like the title track as opener as it sets the tone for the album....love Fish Hook Girl but
don't think it goes with the other songs at all...
Even god has to soundcheck sometimes

If you look at ascap.com, it reveals that a working title for "Sense Of Life" was "The Man Who F Sharped"! And "See The Horizon" was "Pretty", while "Fish Hook Girl" was "Can/Jam". Les didn't get a credit, so maybe this suggests he didn't play on them. He DOES get a co-writing credit on "Beyond The Green", though.

Still, the info on ascap.com doesn't always seem 100% correct, so don't take this as a fact.

Good sleuthing! I did notice Les got credits on Evergreen songs and Fools Like Us so I was trying to see what the credits were on those songs. I figured if there was no credit then Les was not on it. Not definitive but likely.

Didn't Les say when he came back for the reunion and Evergreen that he didn't like the fact the songs had already been written but was told not to worry as everything would be split into thirds? Or was that WAYGTDWYAOSLT?

beieve you are correct BF. All went pear shaped on WAYGTDWYL and his mum was ill so he left. Thoughin the uncut piece he says by the time his mum had died they had got someone else in, so less clear that he just upped and went. PLus I beleive he had custody of his kids at that point so was less likely to spend timeon rock star shenanigans. I'll look it out when I get home.....

That's a fantastic interview. Which WAYGTDWYL tracks started out as Mac/Marr songs? I know the Mysterio-era History Chimes/Ribbons & Chains/Birdy were reused, and WAYGTDWYL (the title) existed at that time too (at least as an ad-lib lyric), but are some of the other tracks too dating back to pre-Electrafixion?

When was Les' last gig with the band anyway? There were reports on seven-seas from I think a summer festival in '98 where somebody noticed the bassist wasn't Les, but when did he actually leave?

dunno - but a bit of a clue here:

http://www.angelfire.com/wy2/setlists/page22.html

Halfway down here they start doing fools like us and someone comments that they met mac and will after the gig - not definitive obviously. Hasn't KOK got les's phone number, haha. ask him to ask him next time he calls.
