I remember allowing my mates to persuade me to go see the genesis film - early 80s was it?, and a showing of the pink floyd live at pompei and thinking both awful. Eventually came round to the floyd a bit but genesis are still on my all time dullsville list. I much preferred born to boogie with T REX even though I wasn't much of a fan of that either - oh and that one with all the lesser glam rock bands (Mud, Rubettes - yes folks it was that wild in our house). I remember my dad wouldn't let me go to see Mud so christ knows what he'd have said about zepplin. Mind you the lecture I got when I wanted to go see dylan (yes dylan) at blackbush as probably a pointer. I think when I did start going to gigs regularly I just said I was going out with my mates.

I actually felt bad, I was generally a good son and my Mom was so upset because she was worried about me but I was going to see this movie no matter what. I figured the lie was a compromise so she wouldn't worry. Good thing I didn't get stabbed or anything or the jig would have been up.

I saw these movies in the early 80s. Forgot about Pink Floyd, Live at Pompei. A documentary was tacked on to that one about the making of Dark Side which was very cool to see. The Genesis one I saw was Genesis: In Concert that originally came out in 1977 right after Gabriel left and they still had some good prog rock left in them.

No it's not a very good performance at all and the individual films they made are corny. That thing was edited heavily too. Some of it was re-filmed on a sound stage later to get all the closeups. Apparently John Paul Jones is wearing a wig in the sound-stage shots because he had cut his hair short and Plant had gotten his teeth fixed which caused some continuity problems.

it must have been early 80s when I saw them in a cinema because it was with a couple of blokes I shared a flat with as a student, one was always playing genesis or ELP 'works' or whatever it was. I really liked the who's kids are alright, partly because I was much more into them, but was more of a set of of TV appearances, interviews and limited concert stuff, and doesn't take itself too seriously. Bought it on DVD a coupl eof years ago and spent a very happy afternoon watching it. Not been out of the box since, mind.

That's all right then, I'd hate to think I'd turned into my dad "Turn this rubbish off, how can you like this tripe it's just a noise" etc etc.

Snap, did exactly the same with The Kids Are Alright and the Quadrophenia movie.

As a teen seeing my idols "live" for the first time with blind adoration, I thought it was great then but that movie really didn't stand the test of time. I think the band has even made cracks about it since saying that it was a mediocre performance at best.

Yeah I enjoyed it at the time but there's no way I could watch it now.

I have to say I'm really enjoying this Bunnymen Summer Quiz.

the only thing I have any real objection to in Quadrophenia is Sting's haircut. Picked up a book a couple of years ago called 'jimmy's story' or something equally crap, and was an attempt tell the tale of what happened to jimmy after the film/album (though to be fair the metaphysical nonesense of the album isn't really touched on in the film), however it is probably the worst book I have ever read. Obviously the film has leslie ash in it at about the age of fifteen, pre lip-job, so that balances it out nicely. Also - apropos of nothing - I know someone from my deep and distant past who knows gary shale who played spider and he seems to make a living out of still going to mod conventions. good old facebook eh.

Also saw TSRTS at the cinema one very cold and foggy night.... and it was cold and foggy in the cinema too which went quite well with the weirdness at the time....used to love that bit where the wizardy bloke waves the sword over his head and the special effect happens...... but it is pants now....

I saw Led Zep at Knebworth 1979, I was 16 and had to beg my parents to let me go and camp out for a few days with my boyrfriend and mates. It was the first time I was allowed to stay out all night... can't believe they let me go.. ....bless them....

Used to love Genesis until And Then There Were Three.... it was one of those times when you love a band and then get their new album and don't really like it but convince yourself that you do because you hate the fact that you don't..... I blame Phil Collins...
