when the Psychedelic Furs came through my town recently, I guess tickets were not moving at a 1000 person hall, so instead of moving to a smaller venue, cancelling or having them play to 200 people or whatever they gave away tons of tickets. I'm not sure how the money works for something like that but it was a well attended show and the Furs were spectacular as well.

Saw the PFurs once not too long ago and they put on a great show as well. For as many times as they come out these ways, feels like a few times a year, they still do well.

Next step down from 150 capacity is the local pub or someone's living room (homes are bigger in the country over yonder). Guess that reason is the same for the other cancelled shows. Maybe they bit off more than they could chew by booking 10 locations. Agent man should've taken heed being that they cancelled 2 of 4 on the first run. Who would take that sh*t on. Blows my mind.

The Furs seem to have touring for a living down pat. Impressive when you consider that Butler is 57 and still has a great voice. I think he even had back surgery after an injury in the middle of a tour, cancelled some gigs and then got back out there.

It is great to see bands in that age range who are dependable. Mr. Brian, I liked reading what you wrote about them downsizing. I went to see the Stone Roses in Mexico City and they downsized venues by quite a bit in a couple weeks time of the show. Good on them for making it happen and not canceling.

Richard Butler is in great shape. It's hard to stay fit as a fiddle after certain age points but it is kind of gross to go to see a bunch of older overweight blokes waddling around on stage.

When I saw the Furs I was amazed by happy Butler seemed - I've seen them pass through 3 times - always energetic and enthusiastic just like Mac.

And Butler's voice sounds like he is a chain smoker, just like Mac.

I disagree. Butler at least is consistent. I've seen the Furs multiple times as well as Love Spit Love. He was always kind of a cross between a raspy Bowie and more melodic Johnny Lydon. He is trim and fit, moving around while modern Mac stands at the mic stand with a cigarette being surly and warbling through songs. He can't even be bothered to play his guitar. It is a completely different person than the old days. Then we are gleeful when he has a somewhat good night and get all hopeful again.

i disagree - mac sometimes walks over to the drum riser and picks up a drink. Never known him do much more apart from an occasionaly bit of feet in the cement grooving, but that was a long time ago. Better when he occasionally picked up the guitar though. Only saew the furs a coupl eof times in the eighties where he did a bit of floating around, not actual floating mind - just seeemd so.Have the furs been to these shores of late? Saw the chameleonsa few years back and they were all quite slim, but in a way that suggested it wasn't through hitting the gym. Didn't stop to aske them though.

The Bunnymen shows over the last 18 months have been as good as they've been for many years, just thought I'd add some perspective, having actually seen the shows.

For the past 2 years/Christmas shows, I didn't find them to be that hot. Pretty mediocre actually. It felt very run of the mill. For the rest that I saw going back to 2008, might have been 15 times, they were hit or miss. I can recall 3 or 4 great shows. The others were ok/good. Too low a number to keep following live.

Been to see loads of older bands in the past few years (free tix) - shows ranging from Jethro Tull, Cheap Trick, Peter Frampton, Stone Roses, Blur, New Order, the Coachella bands on down to the younger ones like Palma Violets and Jake Bugg. Really loved all of them and you get a vibe on who is going through the motions v who really wants to be there. Used to love meeting up with my friends at Christmas in the UK and going to see the Bunnymen but at this point, we'd have a better time out at a bar than spending the money to see them. Add in reading the last couple interviews kind of spoiled it for us. Thank god for the Crystal Days/Croc/Huh shows. At least some old songs were brought back to life. Otherwise, what you're getting is at least the same set list since 2008. If I'm not mistaken, it'a roughly also the same since 2002.

I think a couple others on here said they stopped going to the shows. I'm leaning more toward that crowd.

To be honest the band can still be fantastic and ill always consider going wherever they play ....but I'm bored of Liverpool shows....the drunk fat scousers pushing down the front , incessant talking , singalongs to Killing moon ,the overpriced hotels , the effort to get there.Just wish they would play somewhere else for a change .

Liverpool's good for me because it's dead handy, it's only 10 miles. I'm fed up with the academy though, it's a dive. The phil is miles better, and it probably holds about the same amount of people. I'd rather pay £30 and watch them at the phil.

I liked the Phil but it's a bit weird having to sit for most of the show and it has a bit of a 'special occasion' feel about the place, ideal for the Ocean Rain show but the Christmas show crowd is always a bit 'livelier'. The Olympia was a great atmosphere as was the Empire years ago.
