New Bunnymen album due out at the end of 2013

I wish I was excited about this but we've been down this road before...

After working on solo projects for the last couple years, Echo & The Bunnymen braintrust Ian McCulloch and Will Sergeant will reconvene in the studio this summer to record the band’s 12th album, McCulloch tells The Quietus in a new interview, saying the record will be called The Garden of Meedin’ and will revisit the band’s early sound.

The album, due out at the end of 2013, will be band’s first since 2009′s The Fountain.

McCulloch tells The Quietus:

“I’m just trying to get a start before I get together with Will. It’s worked the same way for a long time — since the split, and with Pete (De Freitas, the Bunnymen’s late original drummer) and Les (Pattinson, the original bassist) not being around. All those days of rehearsal rooms used to get on my nerves — three hours of headache, earache, until I realized it was much better just to be in Yates Wine Lodge for three hours while they made a racket.”

He adds that his new songs revisit the Bunnymen’s early post-punk sound:

“It’s more like the early stuff with loads of spiky guitars and space. But as much as this is reminiscent of the past, it feels dead new to me. There’s loads of space on there and it just unwinds during the course. I like that about us, things like (1981 single) ‘Over The Wall’ — it sounds like a journey. A lot of that was down to Will.”

Although McCulloch and Sergeant have continued to perform as the Bunnymen, they’ve recorded separately for the past couple years. MuCulloch last year released a fan-funded studio album called Pro Patria Mori that will be reissued next month in a 2CD package titled Holy Ghosts that also features a live album. And Sergeant released an instrumental solo album and has recorded a new album with his former bandmate Les Pattinson as the instrumental group Poltergeist.

Mmmmhmmm! Wouldn't it be great if just once all his blatherin' about going back to the old sound etc. were true. Although the sound's not really the worst issue, is it? It's those godawful lyrics.

Problem about this is once again Mac is giving the impression that he has already written the songs without any input from Will other than planning to summon him to the recording studio to sprinkle his magic guitar dust on the tracks. Dunno, the interview is confusing from what he is planning. A few years back he suggested he'd written another Bunnymen album to follow up The Fountain in the same way, and then Pro whatever it's called Holy Ghost came out. Hope I'm wrong and it's a belter. After Will's recent stuff, which has filled my long gone interest in the band, would be nice to hear something come from them together actually worth subjecting my diminishing hearing to.

So basically fuck the process that made four legendary albums. This new way is much better.

Can't wait for the new album of spiky, jagged mid-tempo ballads.

I sure hope Mac produces this album. I'd hate for it to be too spiky or have too much space.

Sounds ominous. The more space the better.

I can't say I'm excited either, but rather curious.

I fear the Cheese Doctor is right.

"A Big Load of Shitey Bollocks" - much better and more memorable album title than "The Garden of Meedin'". Album cover photo of a plastered wall with excrement wiped down the front of it. Close-up shot of a pair of hairy bollocks on the reverse.

If only it could be true, space... post-punk... Over the wall...

But I can't believe they could do it, especially Mac, of course
To the logical limit

Look what we all want, wish, and pray to happen is that maybe just maybe Les will come back for one last album, and tour and then they'll call it quits.

I know that the buns probably don't read this forum site but just one more time?

I mean poltergeist are practically an instrumental bunnymen group. Who cares what the lyrics are like with that sound it doesn't matter.
