I don't have it. I am intrigued by this version of History Chimes but if I get it it will be a while. What are the liner notes like? Anything good?

They're nicely done, good to have all the additional stuff in the same set (I always rated the b-sides from the Candleland era). My only gripe would be that some more info on the non-album tracks and previously unreleased versions would have been useful. Great set.

I wish I would have ordered "Mysterio" first, as "Candleland" doesn't have anything new, which I knew beforehand. I won't order "Sliding" for the same reason, but I'm curious about the early versions of "Honeydrip" and "History Chimes".

They should have included the demos of Slideling instead of just the single and EP b-sides. I know they exist.

They should've included all the tracks recorded w/ Johnny Marr!! Wonder if we'll ever hear them.

What's the story about the alleged scrapped first version of Mysterio (rejected by record label?)? Are these so called "early versions" from that album?

Well History Chimes ISNT with the Prodigal Sons.....I can tell Mike Mooney a mile off.Pomegranate and Honey Drip are demos but have a certain garage feel to them rather than the over produced Mysterio versions.History Chimes no further details. As has been said could have done with more detail in the packaging plus the photos have all been used before. But hey ho...good to have and nicely done.

I'm not sure if this clears things up, but I did ask Marr this, when he had a Q&A section on his newly launched jmarr.com website about 10 or maybe 12 years ago.

Johnny, are the following songs the correct track listing for the "album" you recorded with Ian McCulloch in 1993? Were any other songs recorded in the same sessions?

1. Blue

2. Dark Age (aka Dark Angel)

3. Heal My Soul (aka How Does It Feel To Be On Top Of The World??????)

4. Hieroglyphics City

5. History Chimes

6. Lowdown

7. Never Never (aka Never)

8. Never Never Never (aka Nothing Lasts Forever)

9. Nowhere To Nowhere

10. Overnight Ripe

11. Touchdown (aka Too Far Gone)

thanks for your help

Yeah, that looks right.Don't know "History Chimes",and one was "Overnight Ride".

It should be noted that I threw in "History Chimes" as a red herring, since this wasn't one of the Mac/Marr co-writes (according to bmi.com), because I didn't want just a "Yeah" as an answer. As you can see, he did spot it! So I suppose that means that he didn't play on it, unless it was known under another title at that point.

It should also be noted that "Dark Angel" and which song became "How Does It Feel.." are just guesses, so don't read too much into that!

Thanks. This is interesting info! Now if the mystery of the missing tapes could be solved. Mac says they were stolen but many doubt this.

Yeah, one of them half admitted in an interview that it was more or less a cover-up story, didn't they?

Perhaps they were burnt on the Isle of Jura when The KLF destroyed their master tapes after leaving the music business, ha ha. Shortly before they did, Drummond said he wanted to sign Mac who was apparently without a deal at the time.

On the other hand, there was a story that Mac played the tapes for Rob Dickins(?) at WEA who wasn't impressed with the finished album and thought the demo version of the album was better. So there's two versions of the album, and surely the tapes in the "courier van" weren't the only copies.

Also, what's this thing about The Sun having a track you could listen to over the phone?

Moreover... Wiki articles now say the album had a working title of "Touch Down" (Touchdown was the original title of Too Far Gone, rembember), and there's this:

"25 Aug 1993
THERE'S A BUNNY THING Stuart Clark
IAN McCULLOCH is currently putting the finishing touches to a new solo album which The Christians' Henry Priestman, who's guesting on the sessions, describes as "by far and away the best stuff he's come up with since leaving Echo & The Bunnymen."
