my youngest had her last exam the other day (GCSEs) and so starts the long summer of doing nothing in particular - apart from the schools have all adopted the american prom bollocks so she's gearing up for that. As it happens she's very good at doing nothing in particular so she'll have a whale of a time.

No topic is off limits, and frankly I'm suprised no one mentioned "tittays" in the thread. Not only do they get the generous 10 weeks of summer, but overall they get an additional 4 weeks if you include spring break, winter break, mid-winter break and all the various bullshit days off. I thank the teachers' unions for that crap, as working only 8 months out of the year is brutal

Malbert, I have several friends who are teachers, and they work their ASSES off for not a whole lot of money, considering they are charged with shaping young minds. Also considering they are required to receive constant continuing education, deal with fractious parents and misbehaving and problem students, bureaucracy, and lots of political bullshit, perhaps you should be a little less judgmental.

I did not mean to come across as judgemental, and I can only speak of teachers in my area. Some make $75,000 and for 8 months of work, I think that's pretty damn good. I also have friends who are teachers, and my gripe isn't with teachers as individuals or with good teachers, it's with the unions. I certainly know what it's like to work with kids who are pains in the ass, as I worked in a kids' mental hospital. I got paid crap, but I loved the job. I think we all know that some people go into the teaching field because of the perks; they're shit teachers, and then they make tenure so they can't get fired. I think that's wrong. If you suck at your teaching job, you should lose your job like anyone else in any other field.

I can't make a blanket statement and say "My area IS America.", but I am talking about NY state, and the Buffalo area, although I live in a suburb and my children do not attend Buffalo city schools, which are a disaster.
