The 2005 Martin Scorsese Documentary "No Direction Home" might. I was in the same boat until I saw that. The thing with Dylan is that many have him in their minds as this caricature folk singer but his story is very interesting even if you can't get into his songs.

I don't have a problem with the songwriting, but hearing him sing (and I use the term very generously) makes me want to stick an ice pick in my ear while chanting "Make it stop. Make it stop." I can barely make it through the two Traveling Wilburys' songs I actually like because of him, but my love of Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne keep me going.

I didn't like the Traveling Wilburys either, but his work through the 60's was pretty great. There was a time when Dylan could sing and didn't sound like the stereotype we all seem to know now.

The guy was extremely talented, no doubt, and I like the way he never signed up to confirm anyone's expectations of him.

Well, I'll give the guy some credit for having a part in producing an attractive son, Jakob, but he sings as irritatingly as his father.

I never liked Bob Dylan either until I saw the 'Don't Look Back' doc in the early 2000's. Even if I had any doubts after watching it, hearing 'Leopard Skin Pill Box Hat' played loudly in a vintage clothing store in San Fran a couple years back solidified my new interest.

I've seen Jakob Dylan in person and he is a real stunner. All depends on what you like though.

The new Mac stuff is not Bob Dylan-esque.

I think Dylan is just the "go to" guy when someone sounds a little folky and then people throw that term around. I'll bet most people that use that term never heard a pre- 70's Dylan album from start to finish. I know I didn't myself until the last few years.

that's a very good point.

i kind of think the new mac stuff sounds like it's for old people. nothing wrong with old people as we'll all be there some day. feels like a follow up to 'candleland' but written at age 70.

I made a Seinfeld reference the other day and the 16 year old behind the counter had no idea what I was talking about. I said "you've never heard of Seinfeld have you?" She just shook her head and then a couple more grey hairs appeared on mine.
