VT being rubbed out on Wikipedia

Postby Mr. Brian » Thu Feb 16, 2012 10:26 am

I am very happy that someone takes the time to update all the Bunnymen Wikipedia pages for the albums etc., I really am, the more resources and listings the better I say.

At one time there were references to my site on the Wiki pages but I see now that almost all of them are gone. On the Discography page it is obvious to me that they lifted notes and phrases directly from my site but then still didn't credit Villiersterrace.com in the References section. I did just add villiersterrace.com back to this section but I'm sure it will be gone. Villiersterrace.com used to also be linked on all the individual album pages, but not anymore.

Now I am not going to say that everything on my site is original. It's not of course. I copied things from other sites too to get a lot of information. I consider this site to be an archive of Bunnymen material, however I do at least link back via my Links page or add folks to the Credits page when I do that.

I guess whoever is doing this doesn't want villiersterrace.com to get any credit. I have my suspicions.

I started looking at the revision history. My links in the External Links for the Album pages were being removed by "JD554" as a spam link. I don't see how my site is a spam link, and the Discogs.com site is not. JD554 is no longer active.

So we conviene a Truth Squad to constantly maintain VT presences in the narrative.
Show me how to edit Wiki pages and what text to maintain.
After that, we can work in shifts.

P.S. I already thought of whatever "rubbed out" jokes that will appear in this thread.

I figured that would get some attention.

I just think it's shitty not to get some credit when they are using my site as source material in some cases and then removing my link on purpose in other cases.

Here's a question: can there be an entry about Villiersterrace.com? Is that allowed?

If so, it could include discussion of efforts to suppress its influence.

Btdubs, I'm good at technical writin' and such.

Also, I have been lazy in keeping this discography section up to date. I suppose Wiki will overtake it in content eventually which isn't a bad thing. Wiki wasn't a big presence when I started this site about 2005 . Discogs has a lot of great material too. Both are community driven and I am the only one that can update this site, it's just nice to be recognized for the work.

Anyone can start a Wiki page about anything. Anyone can edit a Wiki page unless it is locked down which is something they do on some pages after they get vandalized.

So it sounds like a Villiersterrace.com (aka pickled onions) page is need.

But who has the time and knowledge to capture the iconic history of this site?

Jack you did come up with the "Welcome to The Bunnymen Underground" subtitle of the forum when it was added. So don't be shy, make sure that gets in there.

I'm actually interested in an article which explores the story of an unmoderated fan forum and conflict with the moribund official internet presence. The whole pickled onion thing, removal of links to VT, etc. (Also, are social media replacing websites altogether?)

It would also be fun to discuss the enduring memes that have developed on VT. Who knows, there may be an existing body of knowledge pertaining to the evolving dynamic of mature internet forum communities that could be referenced. (By "mature" I mean "old enought to reach a semi-equilibrium state".)

The Noel Burke interview would be mentioned, of course. (That could never happen on the official forum. Heck, an interview with *Will* probably couldn't happen.) The day the BOF exploded would be mentioned also. Lots and lots of interesting material in this little story.

It'll get the band some publicity, though
may mean an influx of undesirables to VT itself.

Only probably is it will be slanted from the JackT perspective.

The section on punctuation issue on the site is going to take up a massive amount of memory space for the wiki servers.

It'd be fucking quiet round here if it weren't for the undesirables.
