Best of 2011

We know there is more to life than the music of the Bunnymen. Talk about those other bands here.

Best of 2011

Well, I had this idea and then realised I have bought hardly any new music this year, and not much old stuff either. Old stuff - a couple of stones remasters (Exile on Main Street & Some Girls) and a couple of eno noodlefests. All of which pretty much what you'd expect. New stuff, can only think of the horrors album, as recommended by several people on here. Found this a real slow burner but played it the other day and yes you were right.

So, any other good stuff from 2011?

I bought one and only one album this year, but turns out it was from 2010. Good stuff, though.

Purtiy Ring
Black Keys
Tori Y Mori (Was that 2010?)
Pj Harvey
Lykke Li

Honorable mention
M83
Neon Indian

Not bad for an old fart still trying to follow music. When I talk with the young folk and hear the names of the bands they are into that haven't reached beyond small blog write ups and then hear them and how good they are, I realize I am the old guy taking the music being handed to him.

The best music I bought was "Wasting Light" from the Foo Fighters. Close second, Adele's "21".

Don't worry about it. Most of this lot are stuck in 1984.

Did someone say 1984?

What a great year.

Purple Rain.
With the Force as his ally he did battle with the Dark Lord. And he showed the measure of a true Jedi at a place called "The Death Star" where hope for the Galaxy was reborn. May all who struggle against tyranny hold his memory in their hearts

The Wild Swans' Coldest Winter for a Hundred Years is majestic.
Chapel Club's Palace (as recommended on here by Ghostie and Dave Smith was the find of the year.)
Factory Star's Enter Castle Perilous, the Occultation stable go from strength to strength.

Live highlight for me was the Bunnymen at the Liverpool Philharmonic, what a night, best I've ever seen them. The Wild Swans at the Stanley Theatre and Mac at Liverpool Cathedral were magnificent as well.

Don't know FC if you ever checked out S.C.U.M. Very similar. Peaches Geldolf's boyfriend is their lead singer I believe and is, therefore, probably in The Sun as much as Professor Green. All a bit pretentious bollocks to me, although their album is listenable, all dark and gloomy just like The Horrors' Skying. Mr McCulloch and Mr Sergeant take note for future reference.

Their music is great; the singer, not so much. He looks like Prince's white little brother with all the drama of Pete Burns in "You Spin Me Round".

His hand gestures are a bit irritating. I'm a different kind of lead singer to others and certainly that Faris bloke (and we do not sound like The Horrors by the way) - look at my hand, it goes round in a circle. Or I can hold it in the air like I'm smoking, but I'm not smoking or holding a cigarette. Interesting isn't it?
