Glasgow = Carnage...!!!!

Postby Grumpy_Jimbo » Wed Sep 28, 2011 6:15 pm

Tonight was a total disaster, the worst performance I have ever witnessed from Mac.....

Heading to bed so won't go into too much detail........

1st set was excellent, band was on form, Mac was jovial cracking jokes and crowd was well up for it.......

Now for the second set, the Ocean Rain set...!!!!!!!

Started off great till we hit Thorn Of Crowns, where mac then went into a ramble halfway through it slagging off the lighting guy then slipped further and further into a diatribe in general.... Onto Killing Moon where in the middle he starts slagging off some off the crowd.... This continues through both Seven Seas and My kingdom, by the point the band starts Ocean rain, Mac has alienated a fair amount of the crowd and some started heckling him and then offers to fight them, this continues for a few minutes till they start the song..... Some of the crowd are still hecking Mac so he walks off and the band follows 2 minutes later.......

After a 5 minute wait, they reappear Mac apoligises and the band start playing Killing Moon again, but once again Mac loses it starts abusing some of the crowd and then he seems to start arguing with Will on stage.......

Mac walks off again.......................... End of Gig, and maybe End Of The Bunnymen....??

Sad night, the biggest crowd the band have played to in Glasgow for overy a decade and most left very disappointed including myself........

Have posted my thoughts on tonight on Tour post, but spoke to someone on way back who said not sure if they would go and see Bunnymen again, and I said I dont think you need to worry about that, as it very much looked like the end.
Went to Crocodiles/HUH show in December, but after forking out eighty quid for tonight, thats it for me. And probably the band too.

a shocker.......27 years of attending The Bunnymen and it looks like a Watership Down moment I'm afraid.

I doubt it, Mac and Will need to support themselves financially, which I think is the #1 reason they are still together.

If they continue to be basically a tribute band to themselves (same songs every tour, OR gigs), they probably should break up. Their legacy may already be tarnished at this point so it may not really matter, but as a fan I'm about as apathetic as can be.

I was reading some comments from the Bunnymen's FB page, and someone mentioned that Mac may have received bad news in the middle of the show and was crying at one point. Anyone know any more?

When they reappeared after his first walk off, Mac apologised munmbled he had just received some bad news........ Then started Killing Moon, during which Mac seemed to get quite emotional at one point and looked like he started to cry, sadly this was followed up with a further diatribe to the crowd, some of the band and finally to Will, then he disappeared not to return........

Sorry to sound harsh but if you receive bad news before a show you act professionaly do the gig and get out or you cancel if you can't, you don't get bladdered and alienate your fans as what seemed to happen last night.

Certainly looked as though he was crying during 2nd shambolic Killing Moon, but as per other comments, on stage is not the time or place. I think you really had to be at the show to see what a shambles it was.

Yes Jimbo

I myself was at the gig.

The most bizarre Bunnymen gig I have ever been to. The opening set was ok, I felt Mac was not letting his voice go. I thought maybe he was saving himself for the Ocean Rain set. The choice of songs for a 'Greatest Hits' set were odd to say the least, new songs which I would not really call greatest hits and older songs which although are great, I would not call greatest hits!

Moving on the opening of the Ocean Rain set kicked off well, but then the set slowly deteriorated as did Mac's hold of the crowd and even his own command of speech. At one point he threateded to 'Knee-cap someones head off' not sure what that relates to, but not good. He was making plenty of people unhappy with his swearing and raging, making Liam Gallagher look like a saint!

I noticed he was drinking quite regularly through the set and after the storming off stage at the beginning of the Ocean Rain track, he did mention he had received some bad new earlier. He then seemed to cry during the last track a re-ran Killing Moon, then that was it, he went over to Will, Will ignored him and that was the mike thrown down and even Will received a mouth full of abuse and Mac was off for good. The Ocean rain track unplayed!!

I have been a Bunnymen fan for 30 years now and have seen some great gigs over my time, I think the best of more recent years at the Garage in Glasgow. I was lucky to see the original Ocean Rain tour, sadly the RCH gig was no way near the performance of that one. I have also seen a few Mac strops over the years (a quite memorable one at the Aston Villa leisure centre, where he kicked the monitors off the stage!), but nothing like this one. It was actually quite embarrassing in the end.
I think if Mac did receive some bad news early on, he should have let everyone know and be up front. Instead he just alienated himself.

I love the guy and band to bits, always have always will. I just hope this all gets sorted out and we get back to the old Mac and Bunnymen and some kick ass performances we have always loved and expected from them!

the gig was going pretty well, voice holding up and then it was utter shambles for the ocean rain set. Not sure how Mac can go from describing Will as the greatest guitarist in the world to five minutes giving him utter dogs abuse before the second storm off....he was berating him about not fkin seeing it or something which I dont know what that was all about........will must be fed up with all that nonsense after 30 years....the onstage ramblings throughout were strange...beatles are cockneys etc.....as a guy said to me on the way out of the gig he's in his 50s FFS.........

I never heard from the back where I was sitting anything about bad news, then again most of what Mac said was incoherent and rambling, so didn't pick up half of what he said. Even if he received bad news then his behaviour was still out of control, he sounded like someone on a cocktail of alcolhol and drugs- even before he recieved any bad news he was starting to ruin songs with rambling in between and soon after - well in the Ocean Rain set of course. I have seen the Bunnymen since 1980 and I can say this was one I looked forward to more than any other since their early years and boy what a disappointment and an embarrassing one at that. I felt sorry for the crowd who paid a lot of money to see this shambles , i felt for the band and the string sextet whom all played their part in trying to make it a memorable night for all only to be ruined because Mac decides to have a diva tantrum. If he did recieve bad news- then he should have explained- excused himself off stage for 5 minutes, composed himself and then finished the gig.
What i want to know is - will DF concerts refund our money back?

It's not like this has never happened before. Why don't you just think of it as return to classic form?

Not sure if I have been lucky all these years, but seeing them well over 40 times since 1980 I cannot remember him walking off stage and not ending a gig, yes he has had his moments but not to this extreme- well not to any gigs I had been to before. This should have been a landmark occassion and not for the reasons it ended up being landmark....
