London Palladium Show

Postby crystal89 » Tue Sep 27, 2011 8:39 am

I've given this a day to think about and
have come to the conclusion that last night
was, if I am biased a 7/10, and if I am honest 6/10.

The band were tight and as good as ever, and the strings
really fleshed out the sound. Dancing Horses sounded amazing
and so did Lips and The Cutter.

The Palladium was 3/4 full, it was meant to be a sell out, but seems
quite a few people couldn't be bothered to make it, for
whatever reason, which was a shame.

Unfortunately Mac got a cobb on during Ocean rain, telling people to
fucking shut up or fuck off. if he wants people to be quite, then tell them
before the song, not during it, spoilt the show for me that bit. Visuals,
even from up in the heavens, were really good, quite affecting on Noctural Me.
Best song of the Ocean Rain section. The Killing Moon, bit of a cliche I know.
loads of people dancing to Seven Seas.

Setlist

Rust
Pride
Stormy Weather
Stars Are Stars
Bedbugs & Ballyhoo
The Fountain
Never Stop
In The Margins
Dancing Horses
Rescue

Ocean Rain Set

Nothing Lasts Forever
Lips Like Sugar
The Cutter.

I recorded the first set, wanted to sing along to the rest,
and listen to Ocean Rain, will try and work out how to upload it,
or will send the MP3 to someone and they can fiddle around with it,
as it's all one file. If anyone's up for that, then PM me.

And if anyone's got the full show, that'd be great.

I was there and thought it was a brilliant performance, 9/10. That person who pissed Mac off should be ashamed of himself. It put the main man off his stride and that just isn't on. Those people sitting behind me and wife who kept kicking the back of our seats should also hold their heads in shame. I think they might have been German. What is wrong with these people?
The fact that the Palladium ran out of beer during the interval was also very annoying. I bet Will Young's fans won't get that treatment when he plays there soon. Mind you, I'm not quite sure what his fans will be drinking, probably not beer.
I didn't think it was 3/4 full, more like 7/8. Admittedly there were maybe 7 or 8 seats empty next to me. Alan Hansen seemed to enjoy the show.

where I was, i reckon around 50 visually empty seats.
Will's guitar was a little low in the mix for my liking. Gourdie's guitar a bit too loud.
Mac sang really well. Just wish they'd played Over The Wall. Never Stop has lost its punch, Mac just can't get through it anymore.
Reckon the reason why they came on late was because the theatre took a long time to fill.

Did sound great.
Mostly spent worrying if I'd make
the last train home.

Stupid Internet on phone neglected to tell me about the
half eleven train out of London. Wasn't
as fun for that.

Wish they'd started with Over The Wall, rather than Rust.

Maybe it wasn't as naff as I originally thought. would've preffered
a packed venue.
Nice to see the peeps dancing during Lips and The Cutter.

I think there's a lot to be said for choosing seats in the Royal Circle or the Stalls.

overall it was a good night, nice to see Will outside looking very dapper, not sure about the goatee though  a work in progress he says, where have i heard that before
i thought the crowd was a bit flat, mostly due to sitting down, nothing beats standing.
the stalls certainly were the place to be.
as for marks out of 10 maybe a 6, certainly not on the same level as the previous ocean rain tour.

A nice show, but Echo was missing.

Nice sound, nice arrangement, nice venue, nice lights, tight set………….

But is NICE good enough?

The 2010 Crocs/ HUH gigs were insanely great the 2011 Mac solo gigs were majestic

I know this is a different concept, but even the once in a life time Albert Hall Ocean Rain gigs in 2008 packed a heavier punch. Something was lacking but I don’t know what. There was no intensity that hit the solar plexus knocking you off balance.

Perhaps it’s a crime to listen to Echo and the Bunnymen sitting down

This gig was just a bunch of talented musicians playing dame good cover versions of a dame good 80’s band.

It’s a shame because some of the newer bunnys have been doing this for 10 years now. Longer than the original incarnation and yet Mac only considers them as hired hands with a hourly rate for studio work and a £200 a gig. And therein in is the problem. The bunnymen have become a bunch of men singing for their supper

If this band were to act as a cohesive unit with some camaraderie then they would be great again. That’s why friggin Kasabian are so successful, they look and act like a Band

The fact that at least 20% of the seats were unfilled and touts were selling tickets for less than half prices tell its own story.

Still a good day was had good to meet up with a few of the regulars and good to briefly chat to Will, Gordy and Stu.

Overall score 6/10

Have been really interested to read comments made about Monday's show and can honestly say that from my position mid stalls the vibe was really good.
I found that the band was poised, powerful and played with a real swagger.
I didn't care whether the place was full to capacity or whether seated /standing is best.
Crown of Thorns,Dancing Horses and Lips Like Sugar totally drew me in.

Mac goes off on one sometimes but that's him and I certainly did not feel shortchanged by a Bunnymen "tribute band."

There was a welcome punch that I felt made Monday's performance of today rather than retro 80'schtick. Really enjoyed myself!

Loved it, missed Over the Wall (nothing against Rust though) esp. as missed the first set with Over the Wall in Manchester !! Didn't see many empty seats around me in stalls.

Ocean Rain totally ruined for me by the idiot/s who annoyed Mac and even more the idiots
sat behind me who were talking loudly and laughing loudly during it... ruined... morons!

It is a bit torturous being sat down while the best band in the world play the best songs
of all time so i'm glad a lot of people stood up in the end.

Stewards were determined to keep people out of aisles so that was a bit irritating coz
they were buzzing around up and down herding people back to their place....

Daughter came with me of her own free will which was nice ....

Glasgow show ended in disaster last night. For some reason McCulloch between the opening hits list and Ocean rain piece must have fuelled himeslf with a coctail of drugs and alcohol culminating in lengthy ramblings not even between each song, but in the middle of songs. Completely runied Killing Moon to the point that we had a false ending and when it ended no one was sure - so the applause was limited. It came to a climax when fans started shouting to get on with the signing - which he took umbrage to and started swearing and challenging some of the audience to a fight. As he stumbled through Ocean Rain set he got to the ultimate song Ocean rain and also told the crowd not to join in as they paid to hear him sing it and not to have themselves sing it. After yet another false start- he walked off stage. He came on a few seconds later to resume and after two chords started to argue with the crowd again. At this point Will put his guitar down and started to walk off , leaving the full band to follow. At that point I left as it got ugly and embarrassing, so not only missing the cutter, nothing lasts for ever and lips like sugar as an encore, but a completely ruined Ocean Rain set. I have gone to see the Bunnymen since 1980 and never missed a Glasgow gig since then. This is the first time I have ever seen this happen or remember seeing this happen with McCulloch. He is a disgrace and in my view an embarrassment to the Bunnymen name. I will always remain a E&TB fan regardless of this episode, but unless a full apology and refund to the Glasgow people for this shambles is forthcoming - it may have been my last Bunnymen gig- and that saddens me very very much.

I hear they find a way to make it up to you if you hold on to your ticket stub.

Jack's always been a glass is half full kind of guy. Still holding onto that ticket stub waiting for the special announcement?
