made me chuckle in places:

http://www.morrissey-solo.com/articles/01/07/20/070213.shtml

apparently:

then they wrote the official english world cup song (which johnny marr claims they nicked off him)

and
BTW Johnny also wrote most of 'Nothing Lasts Forever'.

also link to this mojo interview, which I'm guessing since we're so efficient we already have here:

Isn't it odd how almost every time there is a discussion about 'most influential' someone always manages to bring size into it (usually a Smiths or U2 fan). On 'influence' it's no bloody contest. Can't see why Morrissey doesn't like the site they sound like a bunch of fucking sycophants. The Smiths were bigger due to heavier airplay for their jingly jangly indie-pop so the radio stations are to blame for that, who was it who said 'Hang the DJ'? well he was fucking right.

As much as I like Morrissey (despite his diva-like, bitchy behavior) there is no way I can compare him to Mac in terms of talent. Sure he wrote amazing lyrics back in his heyday but so did Mac and Mac writes music and plays guitar. And while I enjoy both of their voices greatly, in their prime nobody touched Mac. Plus there's no Smiths/Morrissey song that touches the Killing Moon.

Johnny Marr writing that awful World Cup song (if true) explains a lot. Maybe we should be thanking God that album never saw the light of day and whoever suggested bringing in Will to toughen things up had a clue.
With the Force as his ally he did battle with the Dark Lord. And he showed the measure of a true Jedi at a place called "The Death Star" where hope for the Galaxy was reborn. May all who struggle against tyranny hold his memory in their hearts

And while I'm on the subject Jarvis Cocker is a better lyricist than Morrissey and Cocker can write a tune or two.

DID Johnny write Nothing Lasts Forever (the music, I assume)? It'll make me appreciate him more.

The Smiths' quintessential song is/was "How Soon Is Now."

The period goes within the quotation mark, Jack.

That would probably explain why I hate that song too. I'm no butch motorcycle tuffy like Jack, but most of Evergreen is too pussy sounding for even me.

I blame Johnny Marr.

the smiths were a great band, but the Morrissey solo stuff is mostly shite apart from a few tracks.but as good as the smiths stuff was there is nothing that comes close to the bunny stuff of the same era.
i know the last decade or so of bunny releases are not in the same league as the 80's but its still better than the relentless self deprecating dribble Morrissey does.
i saw him at the palladium a few years ago and it was pretty good to be fair,a few smiths tracks and mostly tracks off "you are the quarry"

The period would go within the quotation marks, if the title of the song contained a period. Otherwise, you're wrong.

I believe the title of the song was "How Soon is Now?". Notice that the title itself contains a question mark. Since I made a declarative statement, however, a period is placed on the outside of the quotation mark.

Now, who wants to stay after school and help Teacher with some classroom chores?

My opinion of The Smiths-fantastic band originally with that run up to Hatful of Hollow compilation. Then Marr goes all acoustic and over-produced on MIM,the lyrics go shit,Queen is Dead is an over-rated flawed OK album(Some Girls?) and then the only two songs I liked were Sheila and Shoplifters.

Over, over ,over rated.Even the record sleeves became predictable 'iconic' images of b-rate UK actors .

In summary essential up to MIM.That gives them a lifespan of 2 years in my book. And where are they now?Marr playing with kids bands and Morrissey killing his image further.

youre a cruel, if honest, historian smiff. remind me not to let you write my biography. I came to the smiths v late, couldn't stand em in the 80s, but that was probably because people were banginf on about em. Then when i grew up i started listening occasionally. But then again i dont need moz to tell me saturday night and sunday nmorning is a good film, despite albert finney's accent.
