Ian McCulloch: 'Les won't rejoin Bunnymen'

Ian McCulloch has ruled out the possibility of Les Pattinson rejoining Echo & the Bunnymen.

Bassist Pattinson was a founding member of the group in 1978 but left the post-reformation lineup before the release of 1999's What Are You Going to Do with Your Life? and retired from music.

He has since returned to perform live with fellow Liverpudlian post-punk band The Wild Swans and plays on their upcoming album The Coldest Winter for a Hundred Years.

Asked if Pattinson could rejoin Echo & the Bunnymen, who take classic album Ocean Rain on tour again this autumn, McCulloch told DS: "I don't think so, no. He was brilliant Les and his basslines are fantastic, but it's been so long ago now.

"He made his decision then and it was the right one for him because he wanted to look after his family - that was his choice."

Of ideas for new Bunnymen material, McCulloch added: "[Guitarist] Will [Sergeant]'s got some ideas - but I've got tonnes of stuff - I've got tens and tens of song ideas. I wanna come out with a totally unique thing. I wanna do it totally different to how we've been.

"I think cellos. I'm hearing cellos doing things. I always like a quite prominent bass - maybe having a normal bass thing played on a cello? Certainly on some songs. There's only so much rasp that you can get with a bass guitar - with a cello you get the same frequency but with a tougher edge to it."

well we kind of knew the les thing from p simpson didn't we. On the other hand I await, the breath baited, for this plethora of songs, with or without cellos. I like cellos too. Sarge could actually make a cello sound with his guitar and e-bow.

chez

ps apologies to JT, conspicuous by his absence these days, if he's lurking and my grammar falls short up there, i have a feeling it is incorrect.

[Guitarist] Will [Sergeant]'s got some ideas, but bollocks to that. I got more, they are better because I say so. It's going to be unique, because nobody else would record such shite as they'd be wasting their money on recording time. I want to drizzle each track with cellos, string arrangements, slow them down, have acoustic guitars, sampled drums and lyrics about love and mushy stuff. Will can come in later and add guitar, but we'll fade them into the background in the mixing studio. It'll be the best album since WAYGTDWYL?, Slideling and The Fountain. In fact, it'll sound exactly the same as those albums.

Oddly, Will said in an interview with a Greek radio station just last month that the next Bunnymen recording will be an ep. Mac still seems to be suggesting a [mushy love goo-fest] album recorded on the spot from his already-written songs. Why doesn't Mac buy one of those one-man band kits and be done with it...

I would pay good money to see Mac perform with that kit! And even more if he wears one of his torn black shirts from the 80s.

That's enough writing your fantasies on here thank you. * Are you mrsmac in disguise?

* Of course, detailing any other female fantasies, especially sexually explicit ones, are more than welcome.

Mrsmac and girlwithnoname would pay good money to see him performing in nothing but that one man band kit, sunglasses and a smile.
With the Force as his ally he did battle with the Dark Lord. And he showed the measure of a true Jedi at a place called "The Death Star" where hope for the Galaxy was reborn. May all who struggle against tyranny hold his memory in their hearts

Sounds like the new music will be a watershed.
