HBO's Game Of Thrones

OK, OK...I accept in advance I'm going to be flamed as a geek of the highest order, but I don't mind. I'm a huge fan of the books (even though the last one wasnt all that good) and I've been waiting for this to start for months.

On the evidence of the first episode (shown Sunday night in the US, Monday night in the UK...following the trend set by Lost) HBO have done a fantastic job of adapting the first novel. It looks as good as a movie and the casting is (on the whole) spot on.

When I mention it to people they often say "I hate Hobbits and all that shit" so I generally give up after one weary explanation that it's more the War Of The Roses (thats the actual war, not the shit film with Michael Douglas) than walking miles to chuck a ring in a volcano. In fact so broad is the pallete of characters I'd describe it as The Wire with massive swords.

I only say all this because I want people to watch it so HBO will comission a second series (there are 5 books so far with the 6th out later this year). Knowing whats coming up in books 2 and 3 I'd hate to see it canned after one season.

Don't know about the US but the UK press have been giving it really good coverage and reviews so fingers crossed!

I tried to read the first book. Worst writing I have ever come across in a hugely popular series. My car owner's manual is more interesting.

Based on the bestselling fantasy book series “A Song of Ice and Fire,” by George R.R. Martin, GAME OF THRONES follows kings and queens, knights and renegades, liars and noblemen as they vie for power in a land where summers span decades and winters can last a lifetime.

Among the early critical raves, TV Guide has called the show “a crowning triumph” and “brilliant,” while the Los Angeles Times termed GAME OF THRONES “a great and thundering series,” as well as “wild and bewitching.” The Hollywood Reporter praised the “excellent storytelling, superb acting and stunning visual effects,” and the New York Post observed that the “art directing, acting and incredible sets are as breathtaking as the massive scope of the series.”

The gross audience for the premiere night of GAME OF THRONES on the main HBO channel was 4.2 million viewers.
