itunes and sound quality

Postby fat cherry » Sat Mar 06, 2010 11:30 am

personally I blame the kids, but I have it so there you go. But the sound when playing stuff through itunes on my pc is terrible. And no I'm not some bring back vinyl and proper hi fi evangelist loony (though, having said that, it might be a start) it sounds as if a someone is hiding in the speakers and breaking wind in time to the music. It was not that brilliant before but just had the version 9 thrust upon me and its worse than ever. Any ideas anyone? Apart from just putting a cd in the player.....

I was thinking I needed new speakers for the computer because it's now a listening console like you said.

Any recommendations on actually good computer speakers?

get a better soundcard - I like the Creative X-Fi (it's got 7.1 capability for home theatre). Then a decent set of speakers - again I use Creative Inspire 7.1

then, use the eq in the Creative utility, pick the correct speaker profile, engage SRS WOW... and you're good.

cheers chaps. soundcard will have to wait. Speakers are fine - it goes through my hi fi speakers and other stuff doesn't seem to have an issue. everything else seems to sound OK so maybe I'll just not use it and go back, thanks jack, to the old gramophone, if only i could find the handle.

well, and I dont know why I didn't mention this before, apart from its only just occurred to me. I thought I'd check what one of the kids has on their setup - which is on the same computer just under their own account. And my daughter's stuff sounds OK. Then I realised she downlloads most of her stuff whereas I'm an old git who still buys CDs and occasionally loads them up. So I found something I know she borrowed off me and ripped (oo er), and that sounds OK too. And I checked one of the only two album's I've ever bought from itunes and thats OK too. So presumably its just the import setting I've used - I dunno, these new fangled machines. If you dont hear from me again you know its alright (or I've died) or just given up.

On my computer I have a pair of Juster Multimedia DC-691 speakers and the sound quality is superb.

just put a new soundcard in (M-Audio Audiophile 2496 or something) and sounds pretty goood now, though the way the old one popped out, i.e., very easily, not sure that wasn't setup right in the first place. Anyway, half an hour farting around with sound settings and alls well in the world.

In the 60s, a lot of music was mixed to be played through crappy transistor radio speakers.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wall_of_Sound

Now, most music is mixed to be played through crappy iPod earbuds and computer speakers.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/7004174.stm

As long as the Internet is the primary delivery system for purchased music, this is bound to continue. Sure some stuff is available in lossless formats. With storage becoming cheaper, that is a real solution...in the future. If iTunes were to go 100% lossless tomorrow, their download servers would crash. Just tooo much bandwidth
