Whole towns apparently gone in Japan. I am afraid that they have been messed up bad over there. Apparently they prepare for this so perhaps the toll is not what the pictures suggest.

As long as there isn't smoke and molten rock bubbling out of the top of it you should be OK.

Doesn't one of our members currently reside in Japan?
It's the worst disaster of all time over there. Maybe tens of thousands perished.

Maybe the "worst disaster since World War Two" might be a better way to describe it, rather than all time. Although it probably is more like hell for those living in the areas affected.

I'm not worried that I overstated the magnitude.

I know that, for instance, the asteroid that caused the global mass extinction event was likely worse, as was the disappearance of Atlantis.

I also do not think World War two is properly described as a "disaster".

It was for Japan at the time in terms of lives lost and damage to the country, particularly from the Tokyo fire bombings and two cities being the recipient of a little boy and a fat man. There's been nothing similar since in terms of a disaster for Japan with scores of people dead, land areas and infrastructure damaged or destroyed. Then there is the knock-on effect on Japanese industry and the general economy, etc. That is what I was alluding to, much as the Japanese Prime Minister meant when he also called it the worst Japanese disaster since WW2. I didn't mean in general.

So summing up, what exactly is your point?

I think what he is alluding to is Japan's worst 'natural' disaster, that is a disaster resulting from 'forces of nature' as opposed to the 'other' disaster which was caused by the US dropping something on them.
