Its been decided we are going to incorporate a YouTube Bunnymen covers section on the http://www.bunnymen.com/ and you all can vote for the worse one.

First one up for officially sanctioned ridicule

When it's been pointed out this is cruel this was the official response:

Guys please remember that the videos are posted on a public video channel called YouTube. If they don't want people to view the videos they have the option to make it private, Also don't forget they are covering our songs.
The Bunnymen have been going for over 30yrs and one reason is humour. Ian & Will have a shockingly sharp sense of humour.
Please don't loose sense of reality.

"Our songs?" Which Bunnymen songs did Pete and Peasy write by the way?

Now don't get me wrong, this cover is pretty bad but setting them up for officially sanctioned Bunnymen ridicule? Somehow I don't think shockingly sharp sense of humor means making fun of well meaning if misguided fan attempts at covering Bunnymen songs.

The Bunnymen are truly dead as a creative force.
With the Force as his ally he did battle with the Dark Lord. And he showed the measure of a true Jedi at a place called "The Death Star" where hope for the Galaxy was reborn. May all who struggle against tyranny hold his memory in their hearts

Some comments

I don't get this. Why would a band and its fans want to rank on other fans expressing their appreciation for the band's work? No one is saying these are the world's most compelling performers, but holding them up for public ridicule from other fans? That's some weak fan appreciation, people.

I'm a jerk and I love making fun of people, but these people obviously love the Bunnymen and I think this is a bit too mean.

NOTE TO WEBMASTER: Learn to spell, you wanker! Its "worst", not "worse". How bloody stupid are you? Having a good laugh when you posted that, were you? Just showing how clever you are, totally forgetting that you represent a band that was not based on ridicule and hate, but of love and life.

If you're a fan of "Echo and the Bunnymen", please consider unliking their Facebook page. They've got a comic genius in their employ who thinks it is a good idea publicly to mock *their own fans* by posting YouTube clips of lackluster cover videos and inviting other fans to vote for "the worse one" (sic). I'm all for the occasional anonymous chuckle at YouTube absurdities, but a band openly mocking it's own (waning) fanbase for the latter's humble if heartfelt efforts at the highest form of flattery strikes me as both cruel and stupid.

Ouch for the "worse" cover version ... not nice for your fans !!!!

‎"VOTE FOR THE WORST ONE"???? WTF?? THIS IS HOW TO LOSE LOYAL FANS. Which one of you came up with this STUPID IDEA??? Your latest 20 year old webmaster? Better pull the plug on this one boys.

Here's one loyal fan lost. What creeps.

I hope this isn't an official Bunnymen page, because this would be far and away the meanest thing I've seen done by a band I love.

well no duh it's there song, if this is an official page. what a waste of time that should be spent creating.. instead of demeaning.. or is that creativity all gone?

And I vote for any Bunnymen cover by Coldplay as the worst.

Proof, if it was needed, that Peter is still running the show.

Bad cover versions. I think the Bunnymen have their fair share of howlers from their back catalogue over the last decade. Now all they need to do is put up is a vid of something like Proxy and the world goes back to equilibrium with the stars and planets returning to their rightful positions in the universe, and all their Fuckface "friends" can breathe a huge sigh of internet relief as the band demonstrate their sharp sense of humour by taking the piss out of themselves as well.

To be honest, the video is boring; it's a crap acoustic cover sang by a Chinese-looking bloke (the Bunnymen seem to have some kind of growing fanbase in China judging by the assortment of youpube videos by Chinese people) - the comments made me slightly smirk sarcastically more than the video. Whatever floats your boat I guess.

He doesn't have to imagine. He saw it and he replied:

Chris Adams wrote I liked the one by the zombie-faced, mush-mouthed mongoloid.

That guy seems pretty wrecked.

And Adams is a cock anyway.

Wow, it really is every bit as bad as you fear it might be (Kook posted a bit of this already):

Guys please remember that the videos are posted on a public video channel called YouTube. If they don't want people to view the videos they have the option to make it private, Also don't forget they are covering our songs.
The Bunnymen have... been going for over 30yrs and one reason is humour. Ian & Will have a shockingly sharp sense of humour.
Please don't loose sense of reality.

So not only are they really mocking fans for playing the songs they loved, but they are doubling down on it after being called out. Wow.

I wish I could figure out how to leave a comment on facebook.

It starts indeed doing much the same as Twatter, describing your day-to-day "life" and "liking" rubbish, like dodgy cover versions or people's descriptions of their day-to-day "lives". Good luck with that one - you'll be needing it.
