Glos tonight-great start

Postby Dave Smith » Fri Dec 03, 2010 7:30 pm

Just got back.Great little venue.Bloke behind remarked in a country yokel voice "oooivve neevveer seeen a baaaand come ereee with soooo muchhh gearrrrr"

The setting:camo dress and netting.Mac remarked "where are the camels?"
Crocs/HUH-generally excellent except for No Dark Things/Turquoise Days which Mac couldnt remember any of the words to even with his lyric sheet in hand! But dont let that put you off what was a great night with Mac in fine sober and funny form. But Sarge was the star.Really impressed how much work the band have put in replicating the feel and textures of the first two albums.

Going Up-faster and beefier than recent times
Stars are Stars-great twin tremolo guitars from Will/Gordy
Pride-fuzzed up distorted and angular.Top voice from Mac
Monkeys-great chiming riffs
CRocs-fast and angry
Rescue-harsher sound from Will and lots of bang
VIlliers-as standard
Pictures-Will on a different 12 string.Very Jangly
All That Jazz-full throttle
Happy Death Men-fucking awesome.Massive freakbeat ending with the keys guy playing additional drums.

Show Of Strength-as standard
With A Hip-beefed up,scuzzy and great
Over the WAll-massive
It Was a Pleasure-probably my fave track of the night weirdly. What TAlking Heads would have sounded like with Will in them
A Promise-brilliant-MAc singing high and Will on Ricky 12 string
HUH-false start but fast and furious and very 60's garage
Disease-as standard
Zimbo-Will with a new slow attack pedal ripping across MAc at the end....
then it went a bit downhill.Macs gets lyrics out....

No Dark Things-band spot on tight.Mac joins in 'most' of the time
Turquiose Days-band spot on again.Mac cant remember ANY of the lines.Really.Crowd a bit confused
All I want-back on form with Mac remembering 80% of it.
To be fair Mac got through on charm with the last three in a small venue, but might need to swot up for Brixton Academy!

Encores
LIps

End,M5,home,snow.CAnt wait for Brum later...

No pork pies.Merch girl v attractive

Guitar heads-Will played his Strat through Laney and Blackstar amps.He also played a 12 string Id never seen before(cherry red-EKO??) on Pictures.Gordy on Tele.

Oh and a note for obsessives on here such as I.....most of the rarer played tracks were completely lost on 80% of the crowd. But that 80% went nuts when Lips started.
Compilation albums sell.

One of those 80% should have given me their ticket so that someone whose favorite Bunny album is HUH can enjoy it live in proper fashion.

Thanks for the summary, Dave!

Was gonna ask the same.
With the Force as his ally he did battle with the Dark Lord. And he showed the measure of a true Jedi at a place called "The Death Star" where hope for the Galaxy was reborn. May all who struggle against tyranny hold his memory in their hearts

Cannot believe The Killing Moon was not included in the encore.

Thanks Dave, great review, really looking forward to the 11th now. Encore eh, looks like I'll be paying Jimbo a fiver.

I got the impression from the various interviews that they'd be going for the camo look and speeded up/variation songs. Sounds generally great from your description and escapes the humdrum standardised previous sets. I think it will be better than the Ocean Rain ones - is that your feeling Dave? Good particularly Mac went for the highs on A Promise. I'm looking forward to this on Thursday.

Pah.. the encores, they will be my exit home me thinks to ensure I don't miss my last train home and I only want to hear Crocs/HUH, nothing else. What time did it finish and what time did the band come on?

They just ran out of time for Killing Moon. The Vox Teardrop was tuned up by the roadie but Mac just said "Cutter next".11 O'Clock curfew and all that.

No Mac guitar.Other Mac funnies "weird spiders in Berlin" and he kept doing David Bowie impressions."We're in camouflage...can you still see us?"

No Mac guitar though.

Ghostie-I loved the attack of the band-Will flying into his guitar.Just a totally different vibe to the normal set.No lulls or softies just in your face classics.Funny when the encores came suddenly Will is playing a lot less guitar which shows how crucial his sound was to the first two.Happy Death Men was f*cking ace-like a Spiritualized feedback number. And only first night etc..

Band on at 9,off at 11 so plan 1.5 hours for main set at the start.

 Guess you can't have everything and also confirms that pic of Mac "practicing" was staged.
