Almond Chicken Mix Tape #1: Drums Kick Ass!

We know there is more to life than the music of the Bunnymen. Talk about those other bands here.

Sorry, Frank....I refuse to hassel the Hoff.

However, I said I would comment, so I am. I'm no expert, but I know what I like. :)

Side A:

Superstition-Stevie Wonder: The funky guitar really got me more so than the drums on this one. I just want to know how he went from this awesome tune to "I Just Called to Say I Love You"?

Past Mistake-Tricky: Dramatic, yet ambient at the same time. The drumming isn't especially dynamic, though it fits the track.

Smells Like Teen Spirit-Nirvana: Ahh, memory lane. I remember when Nirvana got huge in the early 90s, along with the whole grunge Pacific Northwest thing, and I wasn't happy about it. Grunge was a single sound amongst many, but it ended up taking over at the expense of other interesting sounds in rock at the time, including shoegaze. I actively rebelled against Nirvana and refused to listen to it on principle. Now that my bitterness has faded, I would admit that "Nevermind" is a classic album. Side note: check out this Youtube mashup:

Come Together-The Beatles: The other famous band in Liverpool. Shoot me.

American Girl-Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers: The aunt of my ex-boyfriend from a zillion years ago insisted I listen to the album "Southern Accents" with her. Lo and behold, I unabashedly loved it, despite my Siouxsie & the Banshees phase. Kicky drums on this track!

Bohemian Like You-Dandy Warhols: Bouncy track, though I feel like I should be 16 to actually be into this band. They're all too much younger than me! Members of bands I like should be pushing retirement age. :P

Give It Away-Red Hot Chili Peppers: I've never been a huge fan of this band, but back when I was working at a copy shop in my early 20s, one of my coworkers would play "Blood Sugar Sex Magik" constantly, to the point where I was singing along. The propaganda worked I suppose. When I heard this song for the first time, I was hooked, but it was more for the bass line than the drums!

High and Dry-Radiohead: Mr. "withnoname's" 2nd favorite band, and they're in my top 20, I would guess. This means that we have an extensive Radiohead library! We had the pleasure of seeing them at Coachella in 2004, and it was truly a great show, though someone took some kind of psychedelic drug and needed an ambulance (not me).

Mama Taught Me Better-BRMC: They also played Coachella, but in 2006. Unfortunately for the band, their sound guy kept fucking up, so they pretty much had to play an acoustic set for their 45 minute show. They seemed pretty ticked at their guy, probably to the point of firing his ass. We were hoping for a more rockin' set, since their albums are so good, but... ah well! This track kicks ass!

Computer Blue-Prince & the Revolution: The drums (and percussion in general) in this song sound like "When Doves Cry," which I prefer to this one. Plus I just pulled up the video for this song, and Prince needs to put his shirt back on and take off the Hit Girl mask.

She's Lost Control-Joy Division: The way to my heart is paved with Joy Division! The drumming is awesome on this song, hard and hypnotic. 'Nuff said.

Side B:

Bedbugs & Ballyhoo-Echo & the Bunnymen: I have to admit my ambivalence about the Grey Album means that I haven't heard this song all that often. The track has a nice bass groove, and Pete's drumming is always welcome.

Sabotage-Beastie Boys: Funny thing is that I just watched the newest "Star Trek" movie last night, so of course I think about Kirk driving his stepdad's car off the cliff, since this song is playing during that scene. Sadly, the Beasties were supposed to play San Diego's Street Scene last year but canceled due to Adam's cancer diagnosis. So we didn't see them.

Are You Gonna Go My Way?-Lenny Kravitz: The influence of Jimi is strong in this song!

Head Like a Hole-Nine Inch Nails: I don't know how these drums were done, whether through a machine or a live player or both, but this song is fun. I think for drumming from "Pretty Hate Machine" I would have to go with "Down in It".

Still Ill-The Smiths: I'm boycotting commenting on this song because I'm mad at Morrissey for being a douchebag. So there.

Sickman-Alice in Chains: Another band with whom I was angry in the early 90s. Nice drum work, in this track, though.

Some Like It Hot-Power Station: This reminds me of my childhood. I used to dig this song when it was new (now I'm dating myself!).

Fools Gold-Stone Roses: Funky-ass tune with bad ass drumming. Sweet!

Wonderwall-Oasis: I've played this song one too many times on Rock Band on drums, which will tell you I like them.

Sorry for the length.

You asked for unusual, distict or awesome drumming. Good or bad, I delivered on that. My comments -

Superstition-Stevie Wonder: Before anything else kicks in, you know what song it is just by the drums. Stevie played drums on the track, by the way. So I'm amazed. He's blind, you know.

Past Mistake-Tricky: I've been listening to Tricky a lot lately. He's coming to town December 17... and I love this track. Absolutely nothing complicated about the drums. They just hang there in the air. I like that.

Smells Like Teen Spirit-Nirvana: I live in Seattle, as I did when grunge hit. Talk about bitter. Too many "industry" people in town. Too many asian grunge tourists. Bands relocating from LA or Chicago booking gigs in our local spots and squeezing out the local bands. This was not a 'pay to play' town before they came along. Despite all of that, I always liked the local bands, and this one I liked. I think the drumming was flawless on this one

Come Together-The Beatles: The drum part on this, particularly at the beginning, is so fucking cool. Period.

American Girl-Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers: When I was 13, a couple friends and I broke into this guy's camper that was parked outside a local gas station for months. My friends looked for valuables.... I looked for music. I found and kept 3 cassettes - Cheap Trick at Budokan, a Doors greatest hits and Damn the Torpedoes. I loved Tom Petty until he went full-tilt Bob Dylan soundalike. And yes the drums on this track kick ass

Bohemian Like You-Dandy Warhols:
Much too young? The singer was born in '67. How much older than that are you?

Give It Away-Red Hot Chili Peppers: The whole rhythm section is tight on this album. And bass is always more out-in front on a Chili Peppers track.

High and Dry-Radiohead: I love the beginning with the tap tap on the snare rim

Mama Taught Me Better-BRMC: One of my favorites from Beat the Devil's Tattoo, their first album with Leah Shapiro on drums. She's fun to watch

Computer Blue-Prince & the Revolution: I like the minimalism of this one. Plus back in the day I wanted to be the meat in a Wendy & Lisa sandwich.

She's Lost Control-Joy Division: Great scene about this song in the movie "24 Hour Party People"

Side B:

Bedbugs & Ballyhoo-Echo & the Bunnymen: This is the better-than-the-Grey-Album single version of the track. Pete playin' with the jazzy brushes

Sabotage-Beastie Boys: love the video, love the songs, love the drums

Are You Gonna Go My Way?-Lenny Kravitz: The drummer's got badass hair... and she's done VW commercials.

Head Like a Hole-Nine Inch Nails: picked this for the distinct-ness of it. Love this whole album

Still Ill-The Smiths: Morrissey is a douchebag. So is Mac. Yet here you are on a Bunnymen fan forum

Sickman-Alice in Chains: Loved 'em then. Love 'em still, even with the new singer. They put on a better live show with the new singer.

Some Like It Hot-Power Station: Again, distinct drumming

Fools Gold-Stone Roses: Clocked in at over 9 minutes. Almost scrapped this one to put on two or three other songs. But the drums kick

Wonderwall-Oasis: The part in the song where he goes "backbeat the word is on the street", and the drums kick in.. good gimmick.

Gawd. I'm three years older than you and wasn't into the Bunnymen until they reformed in 97. What kind of music were you listening to when you were 22 beggers belief if the majority of music you were into back then, they are now pushing into retirement age. My main musical tastes back then are only now in their mid to late 40s!

Frank, I did actually enjoy the entire mix tape, and I appreciate your efforts in compiling it! Thanks.

And my Dandy Warhols comment was really tongue in cheek, as evidenced by my tongue smiley. :P

It's gotten Jack this far so I see no reason to change.
With the Force as his ally he did battle with the Dark Lord. And he showed the measure of a true Jedi at a place called "The Death Star" where hope for the Galaxy was reborn. May all who struggle against tyranny hold his memory in their hearts

But isn't the very act of commenting that you're not commenting on the tongue smiley means that you in fact are commenting?

This is a good opportunity to derail a thread -

http://www.internationalmixtapeproject.com/

If anyone is interested, for a few dollars this project randomly assigns a music trading partner from somewhere (four different countries out of 12 exchanges so far) -
you get a mix of music.

I find I stay on more for the opportunity to dig through my music and put together a disc of songs I like but don't often hear for the car than for the cd I'll receive. Like most music fans I am finding for someone who is a big fan of music I don't like a lot of it.

I think Kouni's accusation of "muso" may be accurate.
