Wikipedia also uses "champions" for the Carling Cup, which was previously known as the Worthless Cup because no major premiership side took it seriously and usually fielded weakened reserve teams. The Champions are generally regarded as the team that wins the league championship. That league is the Premier League (which used to be known as The First Division) and not The Championship (which used to be known as The Second Division) nor The (now) First Division (which used to be known as The Second Division when I were a lad). Therefore, should there be a match between the Cup Winners and The Champions, it would invariably be considered as the FA Cup winners against the Premier League Champions (except those seasons where the same team hold both trophies as Chelsea currently do). To conclude:
Premier League winners - Champions
European Cup Winners - European Champions
FA Cup Winners - Cup winners
Europa League / League Cup Winners (nobody gives a shit)
