The Obligatory Depeche Mode thread

We know there is more to life than the music of the Bunnymen. Talk about those other bands here.

I can fancy Martin either way since he wears a dress or leather mini on occaision.

I always did and for some reason I never thought he was gay. Boy George, George Michael, Frankie, Annie Lennox, Melissa Etheridge, etc. whatever, it was expected. But for some reason, despite the crazy dress, Martin was just gloriously weird. His 3 kids are all incredibly cute.

And music got many of us through bad times. A friend of mine can no longer listen to the Smiths becuse of that. Unfortunate.

Only reason I stopped listening to them was because my Christian friends told me Blasphemous Rumours and Personal Jesus made Depeche Mode really bad and I would lose my salvation for listening. Gawd, what crap.

http://www.recoil.co.uk/qa_vault/dm_work.html

Having just read your excellent 'Singles 86 - 98' editorials, you confirmed something about DM that has bothered me for a long time - namely the extraordinary amount of time you spent in the studio over the years (particularly when the other band members 'couldn't be bothered' or were away on holiday) and why you never or rarely seemed to get the proper credit for all this work. Was it really the general consensus of the band that production credits should read 'Depeche Mode' and what about the live shows, you did all the programming, so why were you never mentioned?

I've said before that I don't think the credits on Mode albums really reflected the truth about who produced them but to be honest, at the time I just couldn't be bothered about getting into big discussions on the whole subject. I was happy to do the work because it was enjoyable and something I was good at.

In relation to this, I remember reading some comments from Fletch and Martin (around the time of 'Ultra') that were along the lines of "Alan is really boring....during recording periods, he never came out with us and spent too much time in the studio..." etc. The audacity of some people makes my blood boil! What about you, any thoughts on this?

As I've also said before, some of the comments that were made during the promotion for DM's last album were disappointing although not unsurprising and I can understand a bit of why they might have been said. The simple fact is that most people just do not understand or appreciate that 'producing' a record properly requires an enormous amount of energy and concentration. Anyone can go into a studio for a couple of hours a day, take loads of drugs, twiddle a few knobs, whack it all on a CD and call it a finished album but invariably the end result sounds like what it is - lazy and ill-judged. I can't just roll into the studio at 5 o'clock in the afternoon with a raging hangover and expect to be able to work effectively. This doesn't mean that I never take a break during a session but as a rule, I like to keep work time and play time separate so I can give my absolute best to whatever project I'm involved in. If this makes me boring then fine.....I'd rather be boring but have a really good record.

Stop posting in this thread. It diminishes the breakthrough Scouser and I made.
With the Force as his ally he did battle with the Dark Lord. And he showed the measure of a true Jedi at a place called "The Death Star" where hope for the Galaxy was reborn. May all who struggle against tyranny hold his memory in their hearts

Good post though Withahip.

Should have called this "the obligatory Alan Wilder appreciation thread"
Mr. Brian, I find that offensive.

Scouser's inability to se others' point of view is rather grating.

Agreed. Was his dissatisfaction part of switching to drums? I have to say thei early albums were genius. Construction Time Again was brilliant. THough I have to say what really stands out are Martin's songs, and that if they were redone, they still would be great songs. I know Alan got really involved in the production work, but as he also rewriting parts and arranging things? Having just reorder Construction Time Again, Alan's songs weren't as good as Martin's, though they fit the album well.

It's frustrating. A great band can often produce themselves if they have the drive. Few do. Bad production or the wrong producer for the band can lead to musical disasters akin to the Grey Album where it becomes the producer's album rather than a representation of the band at their best. I still wish the Bunnymen had worked with Eno after Ocean Rain. That album would have been great.

I poked around on the Blitz Kids website. They have Eric's, nothing about the Bunnymen and a photo shoot with early Depeche Mode looking so new-ro it hurts. Funny how they and Duran Duran talked about each other, but Martin said that Depeche Mode wasn't as good looking haha. Oh well, a better and more enduring career sounds better than great looks anyway.

Well, I know I'm the divvy around here. But, dear Lord, that shirt Martin is wearing looks like he stole it from Simon Le Bon's closet. And Dave's looks like a John Taylor original. Either that or Devo. Dave admitted to having run around with the Blitz crowd a bit. Why not? What else would Dave have been doing in London?

In an interview with The Quietus today, Erasure's Vince Clarke confirmed that he was currently working on a new dance record with Depeche Mode's Martin Gore.

Clarke left Depeche Mode in 1981, but revealed on Twitter earlier this year that he and Gore would be collaborating on a new project together.

And today, he told us: "I am collaborating with Martin Gore on a kind of dancey record.

So they're making an Erasure album?

Nah. Didn't you know, Yazoo have reformed. Or it could be The Assembly or The Clarke & Gore Experiment. I get terribly confused when people mutter the words "Vince Clarke".

At least there aren't those Dave and Martin make me drool kind of posts. Get so tired of them over at the official DM forum.
