What defines a classic BUNNYMEN record

True. This was supposed to be the one to break them big - and if I remember correctly from the book Never Stop Latham was pretty much in the studio alone once he had the tracks with no input from the band. Or a Bill Drummond type influence around.

The one tune that sounds live and I would like to think Pete played on is Bedbugs. But he isn't listed on songwriting credits.

well, whichever way you look at it it'd be a bit of a bummer if they played someone elses record to show off your talents at your funeral. Plus I expect Dorian Cope Would have a word or two to say abuot it.. as my husband JULIAN COPE, said in his AUTOBIOGRAPHY it was shocking how they used the drummer from Huey Lewis and News's version of bedbugs & ballyhoo as the coffin was carted in. I'm saddened but not suprised that nobody has mentioned it on the BOF, which incidentally doesn't even have a 'we're sadder than you about the loss of a great chum' section. On the bright side the last time he came round he left half a ton of burmese gold in the pantry and we never had the chance to pay for it. good old pete, always thinking of others'

The demo version of Satellite rocks. It almost sounds like a HUH outtake. The overly slick production and Mac's phrasing/lyrics kinda killed it on the album version.

I agree! Some awesome guitar work on it. Completely watered down on the album. I wonder if there is a set of rougher outtakes from their recording session of the Grey album.

Pete rocks!!!!

The best drummers do not get the credit they deserve. Pete was a very arty and musically sensitive drummer. I can't think of too many rock drummers who would go along with brushes for most of an album, as Pete did for Ocean Rain, either.

Sampling extra drums and cymbals was the in thing to do in the 80s. Rockwell Sheraton had a one-off hit with "Somebody's Watching Me" but the meat of his career came from working with bands on additional drum tracks.

One of my current favorite drummers couldn't believe that people weren't playing everything on their records and he was determined to actually do it all himself in real time.

The cymbals were supposed to add something to the sound except that, in this case, it made it not sound like the Bunnymen.
