The movie has the makings of a great movie (a la The Godfather):
Amazing cast
Visually stunning
A man who trusts no one and alienates everyone

But the pacing gets tedious. Especially after this year gave us 3:10 To Yuma and Michael Clayton.

I saw it in a packed theater that was built in 1920: huge ceiling, dome at the center.
It didn't help. Now then, some people clapped at the end but they were probably college students that thought the banter in Pulp Fiction was some kind of deep philosophical banter.

I was expecting Allende's House of the Spirits or Nick Cave's And The Ass Saw The Angel.

Perhaps I am just bitter because I missed the Buffalo Sabres snap their 10 game losing streak with a 10 to 1 win over the #3 Atlanta Thrashers.

I wonder if I am at a point where "We Were The Mulvaneys" epic family tales do nothing for me.

There Will Be Blood is a movie I will see ten years from now and wonder why I didn't like it.

Insanejane - share why you did like it. There needs to be a contrasting voice to my criiticsim here.

I liked it too, but I don't think I could sit through it again. It started dragging near the end a bit.

What to like about it?

The performances of Daniel Day-Lewis and Paul Dano were riveting. Even the kid who played H.W. was amazing.

I was also fascinated by its take on the early oil business. I grew up in Louisiana and Oklahoma, where that industry -- and associated ones -- rule a lot of roosts, esp. in the Sooner State. The story rang true ... the ruthlessness, the maverick oilmen, the effects on the common people. Plus, from a purely personal standpoint, it was cool to see a well "come in," even if it was a fake one.

The cinematography and the music (Jonny Greenwood) were incredible and maybe a lot had to do with the screen and sound of the Arclight theater itself.

I think Daniel Day Lewis is so weird (in real life too), much weirder than Johnny Depp could ever pretend to be. He was so into that role that I felt like I was back in that era. Also, Paul Dano.

D.D.L. just won a Golden Globe for it.

3:10 ebbed and flowed so well. When it slowed it was brought back with a jolt. Ben Wade seemed truly confused about his role in the life of the boy. The period sets, especially at the train track site was amazing. And the music was top notch.

Anyone reading this will have to see that they need to give Blood a shot and see for themselves.

Wasn't Glenn Ford in the original? I've never seen that version.


Also, anyone reading this will have to see that they need to give "Cloverfield" a shot too and see for themselves. It wasn't THAT bad and the good part about it was all the actors were unknowns.

glad you brought that up ... was it just me, or was there a plot hole there? one minute, H.W. has lost his hearing, but is still talking. The next minute, he can't talk at all anymore. did I miss something?

and yep, Insane Jane, I think we did see it at the same theater ... the arclight? $14 for that movie. gulp! at least a trip to amoeba was packed in too

I'd definitely recommend seeing it. And if you do, don't wait for DVD. See it on the big screen. The cinematography is fantastic.
