Nah, 'football' over there's played by over-fed, over-paid nancy boys who wear more protection than you might do on a night out in Rothbury.

Tell you what, let's take our worst NFL team and have them play a European football match against whoever, than the European footballers can play an American football match, with full "over protection" and we'll see who survives what.

St. Louis Rams vs. Spain. Matchup of the century.

Soccer match: Rams lose.
Football match: Spanish team killed/crippled.

Yes, there are people on the pitch, they think it's all over, it is now.

It's been so much fun that I want to start another meaningless long sporting thread, the winner of the Tour de France. Now my French poodle oracle Bernard says that it will be....

true true, though the footy players would get within a yard of the other bloke and fall over in a superior effort of gamesmanship, clutching their head in the hope of getting a penalty anyway so it wouldn't work. I seem to remember when ross from friends played rugby with helen baxendales english chums he got the crap kicked out of him. thats all the evidence I need.

So in a game of skill the skilled players win and in a game of wearing ridiculous amounts of padding and beating each other up the thugs win? Fair point.

I would point out that in additon to being a behemoth, the average NFL lineman does the 40 in about 5 seconds. That is a pretty frightening person.

I took the rebellious route and still did not pretend to care, but to be fair I don't really follow any sports at all.

That's why they have ad breaks every 10 seconds so the behemoths can get their breath back. This is compared to the skill and fitness of the Spanish footballers who managed 120 minutes of precise passing and interplay.

Not to mention the ability to maintain mental focus in the absence of significant occurances.

I'm an NFL fanatic so I'm a bit biased but I could never get into soccer (or futbol here in the San Gabriel Valley). I have nothing against it and indeed watch it with friends provided there is alcohol in the general vicinity.

But I think you guys are discounting the skill of NFL players especially the quarterback. The ability to throw a ball as hard as you can in a window the size of a tire while some 300 lb behemoth is trying to kill you shouldn't be overlooked in my book.

It's just different sports for different people. I love tennis and have been playing for 19 years even though most of my friends think it's fruity.
With the Force as his ally he did battle with the Dark Lord. And he showed the measure of a true Jedi at a place called "The Death Star" where hope for the Galaxy was reborn. May all who struggle against tyranny hold his memory in their hearts
