Their youth training schemes have always been of an exceptionally high quality.

I think the technical ability in the WC is of a high standard. What I can't understand is that you can have average players suddenly appear world class in the WC and then those who consisently perform in the champions league and at club level looking mediocre. In some ways it's a shame that the likes of Rooney, Torres and Messi never set this tournament alight. Overrated? Not really when you look at what they usually do.

The only "names" have been David Villa, Wesley Sneijder and Diego Forlan who is carrying Uruguay. I'm still waiting for more from Arjen Robben in the next few games who like Sneijder is carrying on what he has been doing this season.

It must be down to the way these players are coached during the weeks of the tournament. Balance in the team, making sure everyone is in the right position even if they are not "names". A few youngsters in there as well. Team spirit - look at what happened to France. Teams also need to peak going into the tournament rather than during the qualifiers (looking at England).

The one thing though with club football is that if you loose a game you can recover during the week and then win your next game. You don't get that luxury in the WC. I agree the Champions League is far superior to the World Cup. The whole tournament is much more interesting.

I won't be taking much interest in the Champions League next season!

You're a Liverpool fan then I take it?

At least you might get to the semi finale of the Europa Cup next year with Roy "Harry H Corbett" Hodgson.

Löw 'will continue to wear his trademark blue sweater, with players and coaching staff refusing to allow him to clean the "lucky" garment'.

Octopus Paul predicts Spain over Germany in WCup
(AP)

BERLIN — Octopus oracle Paul is predicting Germany will be defeated by Spain at the World Cup semifinal.

Sea Life Aquarium's spokesman Daniel Fey said Tuesday that the famous mollusk from Oberhausen chose a mussel from a glass tank marked with a Spanish flag, while ignoring the tank marked with the German colors — indicating a Spanish victory in Wednesday's semifinal.

But there could be hope for the Germans.

The only time the usually-prescient Paul erred in the past was in picking a Germany-Spain matchup in the 2008 European Championship, when he picked Germany and Spain prevailed.

Otherwise, Paul correctly predicting Germany's wins over Argentina and England, and also foretold the victories over Australia and Ghana and the country's loss to Serbia.

My pet fish oracle Johan has already predicted the outcome of the semi-finals and the third place playoff but he doesn't want to give away the winner as he has got quite a bit of fish food riding on the result. I wonder which team it is.
