Ian Mcculloch - Live Bluecoat Chambers (1989)

I came, I saw, I asked - but it seems that this is the only true recording of Ian Mcculloch at this venue that is in circulation. The famed Bluecoat Chambers in Liverpool, recorded 21.10.89 at the height of the Candleland tour. Ian Mcculloch's first album was a depature in style, sound, tone and a more depressing fare from the previous Echo & The Bunnymen albums. Songs about the recent loss of his dad and the break-up of the greatest band he'd ever known caused the first album to be dark, but with a synth sounding New Order-ish vibe in "Faith & Healing" and others. Ian with a drum machine, how novel! Anyways this rare show captures Ian at his most rarest form - sounding great, performing at a high-level, and in charge of his sound. Songs like "Rocketship" and "Toad" are performed live (not just on a japanese import 9-tracks) and a cover of Joy Division's "Ceremony" is also added for some spice. The somber "Start Again" is a winner, performed live and raw - as is the inclusion of "Damnation" (a future Mysterio track) and "Pots Of Gold" another cool Candleland B-Side. Enjoy this rare treat you wankers and thanks for the clear-copy and audio for this show. I would have traded to get something alittle more discrenable. Enjoy another freebie of classic Bunnymen/Ian Mcculloch lore. Buy their records, they rule!

Actually when I posted this I hadn't listened to it yet, but the quality of the sound is not vary good at all. I just saw the setlist and thought it was very good, stuff you don't hear live very much or ever. To bad because this would have been a great live Mac solo gig.

Oh, like before he wrecked his voice? This I gotta hear.

And I know I've hammered away at McCulloch's voice ad nauseum, but don't any of you think it's rather odd that both Dave and Martin from Depeche Mode still sound pretty great? They've got really a intensive touring schedule which probably does wear out their voices a bit and certainly Martin doesn't sound as fresh as he did at 22 on Somebody, but he's still turning out.

Ian McCulloch and the Prodigal Sons
November 5th, 1989
Manchester Ritz

Broadcast by BBC Radio One

1) The Flickering Wall
2) The Killing Moon
3) Faith and Healing
4) Candleland
5) Proud To Fall

Recorded by Paul Smith
Produced by Mark Radcliffe

Only five tracks, but the quality is OK considering it's from a C90 tape.

It was the second of two edited gigs broadcast by Radio One in one evening (a Saturday night, I think) the first one being a half-hour set by the Happy Mondays at the Sheffield Octagon.

Mac cracks up laughing in the first verse of 'Proud To Fall'.

I was gonna do and then saw I would have to dedicate 192 MB to Mac and I'm just not sure I want to do that.

That is the worst version of the Killing Moon I have ever heard. Nothing post 1997 even comes close!
With the Force as his ally he did battle with the Dark Lord. And he showed the measure of a true Jedi at a place called "The Death Star" where hope for the Galaxy was reborn. May all who struggle against tyranny hold his memory in their hearts
