Hi Morty,

guess my point is that a poor recording of a confrontaion seems like a strange thing for a fan to post on a forum, leave that to the chavs and gutter press I say.

Erm... why is it strange that I posted it on the forum? After all, this is the Bunnymen Underground Forum and there is a long thread about what happened written mostly by newcomers to VT.com. Personally, I thought it was worth sharing it after finding it on the intertubes, at least to provide proper footage of what was going on in what was already being discussed at length in this very thread.

i went to see ian mcculloch in brighton and the crowd were horrible, really horrible. middle aged people who seemed to have gone to the show to speak loudly over the songs, (i even heard one person talking about previous bunnymen shows he had seen), to shout abuse at mcculloch, to insult him as he starts a song so that he has to stop and respond due to the intimate nature of the venue and just him with his acoustic and then have the gall to complain that he isn't playing enough songs. one punter was forcibley removed for threatening him and stopping the show to call him all sorts of names and then after the enocre (if i was him i wouldn't have stayed on stage for half the show) someone said something and the show ended with mac being dragged backstage by his people to avoid a full on fight. after that i don't know for the house lights/music came on and i didn't want to humour some tossers ruining the night.

horrible horrible people, they do not deserve to be able to go to a concert. if you pay £20 (or any serious amount of money) for a show you go, sit and listen and enjoy. if you cannot hold your drink you don't drink. people around me were complaining about what was happening and they then blamed mac for it! they made comments like 'he'll be in the priory soon'. horrible people. arg, i cannot express how pissed off i felt. the songs he was allowed to sing were wonderful and the banter (his monologues and jokes) between songs was charming. but the crowd... people have no respect for anything or anyone, they are spoilt and pointless now. they should stick to sitting in front rooms looking at pictures of faded dreams and not take it out on someone they did or do idolise...*sigh*

You're Right, Those people were out of line. If you don't like a performance, shut up and leave. Don't ruin it for everyone else. Mac seemed to handle it as well as could be expected - with some wit, humor, until he got up out of his seat, that is.

well speaking as someone who didn't go and was getting the general impression that it was all mac being an arse the clip showed the level of verbals he was getting and kind of levelled the pitch, as it were.

Exactly. It also shows that after the verbal fracas, Mac moved on and straight back to his set and the music.

Be glad you weren't at OR in NYC 10 rows back dead center.

I'll always be thankful I was at the OR show 10 rows back dead center.

I hate to say it but Mac needs to avoid these intimate venues. While we here can be critical I don't see any of us shouting down Mac at a show. It seems since the "fight" with the fan people are trying to get a similar reaction out of him. When I saw him solo in 2003 it was a very small venue. Key Club I think and a group of about five were making it very difficult at times to enjoy the show. They kept shouting and interrupted Mac a few times. Finally he had to say do you want me to finish the song or not? I'm sure Mac isn't blameless but there is a definite element in the crowd trying to provoke him.

Ditto. It has become, "Let's piss Mac Off Night."

For all my kavetching, if I met Mac I'd be all, "All you are the greatest!"

When I got my copy of the OR NYC disc I just stared at the signature. Best feeling since that Broadway Special I got in Manhattan from Mr. Brian and BF.

You mean the Broadway Special you gave to me and Jack. Mr. Brian left us for Chris Adams that night. I have never forgiven Chris for taking him away from us. But just as well. You know have two hands.

You are thinking of the Hilton Four Star Burger I gave you and Jack.

The Broadway Special occurred at lunch at the bar that had a lame jukebox.

I'm understand completely. For all my kvetching, I felt slight awe of them at Coachella.

You would have especially been that way in 1984. "Dude, hit me again. You're amazing!"
