Not trying to be pedantic but, if you check all of my comments 'twas not I that brought up the conspiracy planned ending thing. Personally, as I said I really don't think it was like that and, moreover, why would Mac conspire to present such a bizarre end to the show? By all means, set it up but surely if that were the case it would be far cleverer to have had a conspiracy of a positive nature? I still say that there were many there as lubricated as the man himself and they, as you say, expected something other than what they got. I'd also say that, having spoken to people since the gig that I agree - the majority of people enjoyed the good parts (which were, seriously excellent) but in my experience they were also seriously disturbed and confused by the 'not good bits' - see clip above.

I've spent an hour or so this evening with a fellow traveller to Saturday's gig and, although we both agree that when he was good, he was very very good; when he was bad . . .

I t would have been good, it seems - judging by the reviews, to erase the tarnished memories of Saturday by going to last night's Glasgow gig. It sounds pretty much like all I wanted and expecetd from Brighton's show but I guess I'll now have to wait until Brixton Crocs and HUH (assuming I go) to rid myself of the slight shudder I feel when I think of Saturday.

Just wanted everyone to know the truth, do not mind who the quote was from but it is incorrect.

Seems very few people talking about the Tunbridge Wells gig in a beautiful Kent church which sounds more like Glasgow than Liverpool, but hey who wants to talk about the good moments. There were a lot of pissed people in the audience at Brighton and they just did not get the point and many talked at the top of their voices to each other from the start, rudeness i call it and setting the ball rolling on more people getting pissed off. Oh and yes it seems odd that someone has posted a shit recording of a moment of confrontation. Reminds me of the youtube video of Keith Richard ramming his guitar into the face of an intruder on the stage a few years ago. Mac delivers his self defence to intruders to his show without being tooled up , but is just as effective.

No, they wouldn't.

this will sound weird, but I hope it was a set up. becuase when it ended like that I thought how sad for Ian McCulloch after a fraught evening that there wasn't the applause just bewildered silence. And I felt annoyed with his management for talking and causing the problem. So if that's how he wanted to end it I'm happier than thinking that he went back and smashed Peasey's face in and drank a bottle of brandy and thought everything was shit.
Because it really wasn't.

Well done, that was the gig i was at and not some of the other drivel! The Brian table being referred to was the VIP's/guests. Peasy stepped in coz the people he was talking to (standing up) were getting a bit carried away right at the end (and close to the stage) and Mac lost it. Mac thought it was the VIP's but it was not! Mac enjoyed the show and was not sad, coz i met him!

So this clears up some ?s I had on BOF.

BTW, The bit about the women inventors... anyone remember the "interview" w/Mac on his own site around 2004? It was answers to ?s from fans. One of them was in regards to this tidbit.

I do like the bit about the muse!

I don't get on this forum very much, but when I take a looky, its always very entertaining!!

It's hilarious, far more entertaining than the BOF

Is that the young Zoe Devlin in mini skirt strutting past the stage drink in hand then sitting side of stage and telling Ian he fucked up the intro to Rust?

.

It was not the mini skirt lady that told him he f*cked it up but the women with the angry guy..... (even though Mac was talking to the mini skirt table).....

It is not odd at all that someone would do that as it is a classic bit of footage.

Ian can be confrontational - whether it be with the audience or his friends.

This is 2010 and if you are in the public eye anything can end up on youtube.

It is amazing the on stage punch up at Fairfield didn't make it to to youtube.

Ian is famous for confrontations and altercations so this really is no surprise to those that know him and have worked with him.

I understanfd your defending of Ian and that this incident has over shadowed the positive parts of the show.

That's McCulloch for you - When he's good he's very very good but when he's bad he's...

Just to correct myself there.

It is no surprise to anyone really - his fans and those in the industry that haven't worked with him are all too aware that he is confrontational.

When you have as many altercations with fans, journalists, managers and crew as Ian does- word gets around.

An evening with Ian Mac

Postby Nottsjed » Thu Jun 17, 2010 2:33 am

I attended the Tunbridge Wells Show and my wife went to St Georges Hall. We have also been Bunny's fans since their inception.

I cannot understand what the people who bought tickets actually expected !! If your a Bunny's fan you know Mac live is a very defferent animal to Mac on cd !

I went to this gig hoping to get an insight into the man, something you never see with the bunny's as he is lost in the tunes so much and hardly (sometimes never) communicates with the audience.

An insight I really got ! A funny, sometimes troubled (perhaps nerves), talented and all round brilliant evening exposing a side not many astists would show.

After the gig Mac came in the bar and we chatted about gigs i had been to and generally had a laugh (also grabbed a photo together)

Can I suggest if you dont want the truth don't ask the question !

Respect what Mac did and enjoy it, I am sure there a hundereds of people who will attand the next of these shows to see the honesty and humour of the man !

hello, 1st post here, hi

i went to see ian mcculloch in brighton and the crowd were horrible, really horrible. middle aged people who seemed to have gone to the show to speak loudly over the songs, (i even heard one person talking about previous bunnymen shows he had seen), to shout abuse at mcculloch, to insult him as he starts a song so that he has to stop and respond due to the intimate nature of the venue and just him with his acoustic and then have the gall to complain that he isn't playing enough songs. one punter was forcibley removed for threatening him and stopping the show to call him all sorts of names and then after the enocre (if i was him i wouldn't have stayed on stage for half the show) someone said something and the show ended with mac being dragged backstage by his people to avoid a full on fight. after that i don't know for the house lights/music came on and i didn't want to humour some tossers ruining the night.

horrible horrible people, they do not deserve to be able to go to a concert. if you pay £20 (or any serious amount of money) for a show you go, sit and listen and enjoy. if you cannot hold your drink you don't drink. people around me were complaining about what was happening and they then blamed mac for it! they made comments like 'he'll be in the priory soon'. horrible people. arg, i cannot express how pissed off i felt. the songs he was allowed to sing were wonderful and the banter (his monologues and jokes) between songs was charming. but the crowd... people have no respect for anything or anyone, they are spoilt and pointless now. they should stick to sitting in front rooms looking at pictures of faded dreams and not take it out on someone they did or do idolise...*sigh*

Scott Hutchison of Frightened Rabbit said it quite succinctly about Ian. "He's crazy." They opened for the Bunnymen on tour. Said the rest were all nice chaps.

Lesser known artists have peformed in similar circumstances. It's rattling but it's something everyone faces at some point.

Hi Morty,

guess my point is that a poor recording of a confrontaion seems like a strange thing for a fan to post on a forum, leave that to the chavs and gutter press I say. sound was pretty good at brighton (for all aspects!). Ian was clearly upset by that one, he is one man who cannot see much with eyesight, shades and lights in his face blocking out any view of the audience, who was facing many angry pissed, rude people. Did anyone record Lips like sugar?

Someone might, however, shout, "What's on the end of the stick, Vic?"
