Looks like Domenech should have asked Pires to come out of retirement. Wasn't a good match was it? Patrice Evra seemed to raise his game, but that was the only thing that I noticed over the whole boring 90 mins. I can see why Domenech has become a hate figure. Okay, it was the first match, but it doesn't bode well for the rest of the tournament for a team that have been so good to watch in the past, even up to the last world cup. They need Zizou back.

Oh well, at least there is the big "soccer" match today...

Putting Govou in the starting lineup instead of Malouda was very Domenech. Bring on Laurent Blanc.

Thanks. The Japanese ref was the best thing about France-Uruguay.

Awful shirt though.

I don't know if you got to see it, but Zizou played in the Soccer Aid celebrity thing over here the other week. Great nutmeg in there. Zidane did get tackled once and lost the ball to a British TV presenter who was playing as a defender. See that guy's (British comedian called Ralf Little) reaction at the beginning to meeting Zidane.

Thanks, GOGP. I hadn't seen that. He managed to get the ball off, er, Damian Lewis.

"The DPRK footballers created good shooting chances, not losing their confidence even after losing two goals. At about the 88th minute of the match Jong Tae-se headed the ball before passing it to Ji Yun-nam who powerfully kicked it into the rival's goalmouth, scoring a goal."

I don't know about the shooting chances as I didn't watch the whole match, but credit due where credit is due. North Korea gave Brazil a difficult game and didn't dive, complain to the ref, kept going and were rewarded with a goal. They played like their lives depended on it... and it probably did.

I was kind of waiting for a press release like:

"The DPRK footballers created good shooting chances, not losing their confidence against the inferior Brazilians. At about the 88th minute of the match Jong Tae-se headed the ball before passing it to Ji Yun-nam who powerfully kicked it into the rival's goalmouth, scoring a goal and providing our proud patriots of the DPRK a 1-0 win. Our beloved leader, Kim Jong-il, celebrated as the DPRK footballers made their first step towards winning the World Cup"

The funniest stuff from that match was the orchestrated North Korean fans and a clip shown over here of the team on the bus watching a film of a tractor factory featuring line upon line of red tractors.
