Massive Attack

We know there is more to life than the music of the Bunnymen. Talk about those other bands here.

Looks like they pull off the tunes without the original singers just fine

The show was excellent! Teardrop was the only flub. No low end and the guitar player tried some noodling at the end - Topley Bird was he singer for the night and walked off stage in embarrassment after that one.

Not a ringing endorsement focusing on the flub in most folks fav song

The song was amazing.
Warm bass and the guitarists were excellent. They were way beyong the simple riffs of the original samples yet when they improvised or did more it fit - like having Will or Robin Guthrie on stage as opposed to Steve Vai.

The visuals were a light show like I have never seen. A lot of preaching and even the Howard Zinn quotes (whom I love) got to the uncomfortable level - especially when they discussed money and I considered how much I shelled out for tix.

Topley Bird pulled off all the vocal parts and Daddy G and Naja were same cool as ever selves.

Horace Andy was truly fantastic.

Alright it is pretty good. The synth instead of guitar through me. Definitely lost the low end. And from where I was standing holding the cam it seemed she was ticked. She wasn't.

So my one gripe was in accurate.

It's interesting how incestuous the industry is - Tricky was with Massive Attack before going solo. Martina Topley Bird was Tricky's muse/female vocalist for his first several albums. Now several years after their falling out, she resurfaces as vocalist on Massive Attack's album.

The Bunnymen work with other artists. Will with Primal Scream. Pete with the La's. Ian and Coldplay. Les with The Wild Swans.

Bird sang on Psyche and Babel on the new MA album. And why not? Tricky and Bird split 12 years ago.

Najal did UNKLE's WAR Stories album cover and the new album cover.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/8402022.stm

Martina Topley Bird, one-time partner of Tricky and vocalist on a number of his albums, is another musician involved with Heligoland, smoothing over relations between Massive Attack and Tricky.

"It was one of those things where we've always wanted to work with Martina because we've always thought she was amazing, but politically we never really approached her because of the Tricky situation," Marshall said.

Tricky wants the spotlight. Seems like he really hated the idea that his work was seen as a collaboration with Bird despite the fact she co-wrote and produced some of Tricky's music.

____________

Did you ever consider bringing in Tricky?

D: Yeah, Tricky came to a soundcheck in Paris, I hadn't seen him for five years. It was really odd, but as soon as I met him it just clicked, and [we] forgot the current dynamic and got into an old one, same as ten years before.

G: You know, we asked Tricky if he wanted to come on board for this album, but it was just a case of him waiting for me to call and me waiting for him to call.

D: It's like a Mexican standoff: ''You have to call me twice before i call you''.

G: It was yeah, one of those bravado things. But it might be a possibility for him coming on board for the next one. I still think he's a genius and I love him.

D: Definitely, it's all about the moment really. Tricky and me you know...when we got together it was a very volatile relationship, both Aquarians, both very selfish.

G: [Mockingly] Nooo. Selfish? Nooo.

Not sure I would call it incestuous. They're all from Bristol and must have known each other for ages.
