Morty--everything you said is so true.
Add to that the stories of producers who got into the mix and harmed the product they were so proud of along the way. They were chronically riddled with working with the wrong people at the wrong time who told them the wrong things. The right producer might have made a huge difference. If Ian had done the solo stuff on the side and stayed with the Bunnymen, all would have benefited.
Some bands from that era accomplished and continue to accomplish great feats. But look how few. (U2, Depeche Mode--please add to the list.) Come to think of it, Social Distortion is still around but they were never as big as these guys. Something about the business burns people to a crisp. Just hanging out at various places on the Sunset Strip, a producer offered me a "date" for a couple of lines at his studio. Had to pass on that. But imagine what a celeb might be offered.
