I wish I had a good answer. I am by no means an expert. I usually use canned stuff. My new discography project is on hold. However there seem to be several books that focus on the relationship of PHP and MySQL. There is a PHP and MySQL book for Dummies and others like it. I picked up a similar one from Half Price Books.

I'll e-mail you two electronic copies of PHP and mySQL books that I have.

brian, have you had any problems/issues learning PHP?

at work we are moving 3 or 4 websites to a content management system that is built with PHP and the main web guy and i are just kinda winging it, cuz we've never had to use it before. he knows more than i do, but we don't have anyone on staff that is "an expert" and we are kinda nervous of using this system when we have no idea what we are doing. LOL

do you have any recommendations for what you used/learned? i'm pretty good with HTML and ok with CSS, other than that i have no idea. this new stuff is way over my head

I've usually found the friends of ed books (www.friendsofed.com) quite good for learning stuff and I htink they have one on using those two thingies together (david powers I htink). Can sometimes be a bit too low level but I htink one of the problems with php/mysql is keeping up with the different versions and the inevitable quirks that brings. I started on a project on this last year using their book and then got sidetracked, as you do.

It is a little like learning a new foreign language.

For PHP you really need to go through some tutorials and do the "hello world" type thing, real basic stuff and then move up. It's definitely a hands on thing rather than just reading about it and then doing it.

As far as SQL goes most web hosts have a GUI interface that can be used and you don't need all the command line stuff

I would just start small and go through some of the tutorials
