Addiction

Postby bunnybunny » Mon Mar 01, 2010 11:03 pm

Here are a few of the more depressing lyrics pertaining to this topic, in my opinion.
Do you guys think Ian genuinely wants to get clean or is he just using his songs to get forgiveness
from those he hurts on a daily basis, being the sneaky scallywag we all know he is?

I took every potion
From A to me
And that was devotion
Was that really me?
Is that really me?

Just as I thought I'm thinking
How can I change when I don't want to
Kept getting caught
Kept drinking
How can I blame what I got to

That was me
Cold as ice
On my knees
Everynight
Snow white

I think he's an alcoholic and drug addict. And he eats a lot of red meat.

Drunks and junkies know every excuse for not getting clean, and eventually they either get better or die. However, if his debauchery doesn't kill him, his cholesterol levels will.

Or his smoking. Does he really eat that much red meat?

Yes, add the smoking in there too. That's an addiction.

It seems (to me) that everytime he's mentioned in the Liverpool papers, they have him inside a steak house, plus I found this from his Boston visit last year:

Echo & the Bunnymen snuck into Boston for a show Sunday at Great Scott. Though not widely advertised, the gig, part of the Fenway Recordings Sessions promoted by Mark Kates, was sold out. (We saw state Representative Kevin G. Honan in the packed house.) After the show, Kates joined Echo the Bunnymen singer Ian McCulloch at Eastern Standard for a steak.

The show ended at 11:30 p.m. and he's eating steak?

Wonder if he has some kind of deathwish fueled by all the vices.

sounds like a normal northern working class bloke to me. it may be a mistake to read too much into his lyrics or what you read on the internet. c-c-cucumber etc.

I think it's getting a little nannyish to start throwing red meat into Mac's supposed list of vices.

Is it?

If he was able to get his behavior in check, he'd be able to do a longer tour, his voice would hold out for more than 2 shows, he'd loose the bloat and fat in his face/neck, he'd have some money in the bank, he'd wear clothes that didn't make him look like a hobo, his hair would grow back, my 401(k) would be restored to its former level, the U.S. hockey team would have won the gold on Sunday, spring would have arrived, Toyota's gas pedals wouldn't stick, we'd all win the lottery many times, animals would be able to talk and there would be no checked bag fees.

So Jack, is it? It all starts with saying no to the ribeye.

She made a believer out of me.

Well put, ITM. How long ago it was that Ian looked like he did on your photo, in that blue shirt (before it all caught up with him). Summer of '97 circa Evergreen? Ah, those halcyon days...

Like most of my posts this has been mentioned before but he looked and sounded great in 2003. It was also the last time I saw him play guitar live.

Coincidence?

I think not.
