The Obligatory Depeche Mode thread

We know there is more to life than the music of the Bunnymen. Talk about those other bands here.

I just assumed that was it.

BF, dija type the wrong name?

It is the web, but his statement was along these lines:

1995 - 1996: Alan Wilder leaves
In June 1995, Alan Wilder announces that he is leaving Depeche Mode, explaining his level of input never received the respect and acknowledgment that it warrants.

I'm not saying that AW left because of Fletcher but their relationship was the most strained. In an AW interview he said he would labor for hours on end on a DM song, Fletch nowhere to be seen, then he'd walk in, take a listen and say "this sounds like shit" then leave again. That was difficult for him to take. I think they came to blows one time as well.

I think Gore was more passive and pretty much left AW be when arranging and production took place even if not exactly giving AW the credit he felt he deserved. Gahan did say in an interview that Gore understands AW's contributions and wishes he had acknowledged them at the time. It's interesting that Gore's first thought at hearing Wilder leaving was "there goes the band"

But Wilder's leaving was probably less simplistic than I make it sound.
With the Force as his ally he did battle with the Dark Lord. And he showed the measure of a true Jedi at a place called "The Death Star" where hope for the Galaxy was reborn. May all who struggle against tyranny hold his memory in their hearts

All anyone not DM's Pete & Peasy knows is what Wilder posted on his website when he left.

It'd be pretty funny if Fletch was right and Wilder went back and remixed stuff until Fletch approved.

So searching . . . .
http://www.electrogarden.com/features/recoil/
EN: What were the circumstances that led to your decision to finally leave Depeche Mode? Was there any one event that finally made that happen? Can you describe how the rest of the band found out and give us some insight into Martin's, Dave's, and Andy's immediate reaction to the news? (Sort of a soap opera perspective)

Alan - The reasons were complicated - an amalgamation of factors which had been building and meant that I wasn't enjoying life very much. I decided that I wouldn't make another record while stuck in a Madrid villa during the recording of 'Songs Of Faith And Devotion' (living with the other band members helped bash the nails into the coffin) but I wanted to complete the proposed 'Devotional' tour first, partly because I enjoyed being on the road and partly because I didn't have to spend all my time in close proximity with the others. When the tour was completed, I checked myself to see if I still felt the same - and I did - so I announced my departure by calling a meeting at the Mode office. I hadn't been able to speak with Dave (who was living in LA) despite having left several 'phone messages. I informed the other two of my decision and then faxed Dave (which seemed my only option) to which I got mixed reactions. None from Dave, a handshake and a shrug from Martin and aggressive indignation from Fletch.

Simplistic, that's why we love you BF.

Depeche Mode.com carrying Recoil adverts big time - more evidence of the healing process...
Mr. Brian, I find that offensive.

Scouser's inability to se others' point of view is rather grating.

Do you still keep in touch with any of Depeche Mode?

AW: I keep in touch with Dave, mainly by email or text. I haven't had much contact with Martin or Fletch since '95 but it was good to catch up with everyone recently at our brief reunion at Royal Albert Hall.

Are you amused or bemused by the amount of speculation on the web about a potential return to DM? Do you think they need you, as many people seem to think?

AW: I read in the The Daily Star that we are in fact becoming a quartet again, so it must be true! I think Martin and Dave will always need a strong producer - someone who can really be all things to them, like Flood for example, who can make sure they don't slip into safe ways of working - any worthwhile producer should do that for their artist actually - and someone who can be very hands on with the technology as well.

Whatever happened back then, the pressure must have been unbearable. Did the Gore / Gahan vision just diverge hopelessly from yours, or was your decision to leave entirely born of creative frustration? Or is that the same question?

AW: It is basically the same question, yes. I would describe it more as a lack of vision. I always felt everything was too safe - we could have gone so much further but lethargy was a big enemy. Perversely, we did create some of our very best work under the most tense and trying of circumstances, but it just wasn't much fun - like pulling teeth trying to get anything agreed upon with any enthusiasm. I basically decided during the making of Songs of Faith & Devotion that I didn't want to make records that way any more.

You got that right.

"Depeche Mode are not ABBA or Queen," writer Adrian Buckle told The Times Of Malta. "The story can't be a happy one. It is a story of two boys growing up, coming of age and discovering love. They are abused, used, taken advantage of. It's their sad way of discovering life."

Like many of you, I was a fan of theirs from the first time I heard them. The sweet, fluffy stuff of the first album even. The only people that DM can't function without are Dave and Martin. And that guy who started Yaz did them the biggest favor by leaving. The changes in personnel may have been upsetting, but the song and the voices are what people hear and Martin has been great at adapting to the times without losing what made them unique.

Going back to analog synths for Sounds of the Universe was another genius move since everyone is really keen on the 80s. He talks about it here:

i'm ready to say that they should stop touring and just crank out some really great albums for us. Touring takes too long.

For those interested, this site has a ton of Depeche Videos uploaded. The viewer they have embedded is tiny, but I don't know if some of these Electronic Press Kits (EPKs) have been uploaded onto Youtube and it's nice they've all been collected there.

I have to say it's really weird to realize that I liked them even when they were sort of New Ro. I read the funniest quote where Martin says "We'll never be like Duran Duran because we don't look as good in photos." I'm sure Duran Duran wished they had such an enduring career.
