Massive Attack

We know there is more to life than the music of the Bunnymen. Talk about those other bands here.

Thanks. Sounds like they are running on fumes a bit. Or maybe with so much coming out on the net it seems they should be done with something by now.

I like a lot of what I hear. If 100 had been listenable, it would have sounded like this. Different people will like different tracks.

I find Damon Albarn's voice unpleasant in anything other than Blur's music, so those tracks are a scratch for me right off the bat. that will happen with guest vocalists.

Hope Sandoval is a struggle to listen to as she always sounds like she is singing to herself.

The rest of the tracks are good to my ears. There is definitely nothing like Safe From Harm or Karmacoda on this. But on the track Atlas Air with Tunde Adebimpe, the synth burp at the end of the song is intense after the mellow moody monotone of the first part. I like the darkness of the cd. I do hope we don't have to wait another seven years and the next cd decides to come up with a few tracks like "Live With Me" from Collected.

Good interview:

3D talks about the artwork and videos
http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2010/fe ... ive-attack

"We can't use any of the Heligoland artwork I've painted for the posters on London Underground. They won't allow anything on the tube that looks like 'street art'. They want us to remove all drips and fuzz from it so it doesn't look like it's been spray-painted"

the more I listen, the more I like the cd. A few songs lack a real riff or chorus making them like a Radiohead song but the vocalists on those tracks can carry a note so it works. In general, though, there is a good subtle hook in the songs and vocal lines. Just nothing as overt as Safe From Harm.

Like a BOF member, I may partly want to like this and in turn be giving it more of a chance than if it were not MA. It is definitely a relaxing album with a slight feel of film noir. Sandoval is good on her tracks.

Maybe not amazing but fills a niche in the cd collection that I've been hoping for.

Serving as both a nod to the defining albums of the genre cluster Massive Attack belongs to and a call to evolution, on the broad stroke Heligoland is at times more under the world music umbrella than trip-hop. 3D and Daddy G have never been known for the easy kill, and after an LP dry spell of seven years, the duo return with star-studded smoky subtlety and simmering ambient suspense in place of uptempo dance-remix bait and the skittering Eurotrash beats the kneejerking scenesters long for. Recently-passed Jerry Fuchs makes his best presence on record here, coupled with usual studio suspects Damon Reece (drums) and Angelo Bruschini (guitar).

There is the Jake Brockman - EATB conection.

A lot of reviews are giving this a 9 out of 10. Seems a little high. It is good, but the praise the cd is getting seems more of a relief that it is not 100 Window again than actually for the music itself. 7.7/10

The funny part is the writer is being more cliche and trite than the audience he is condescending.
