I take it back about JOM (John Oates' mustache being wiser than any mustache Will, Ian and I ever grew after viewing Mr. Brian's video.

ok then - the gospel according to William Sergeant, around 1985. This is from the Mick Middles book 'King of Cool'. Fuck knows why its called that because the evidence suggests that its a book about echo and the bunnymen, but nevertheless......

As a bit of background, Mick has gone to the 'pool to interview them but by chance it was the day that the liverpool echo ran a story saying mac hated liverpool and scousers in general. In actual fact all he had said was he didn't like certain scousers, but you know what papers are like. Anyway he turns up at Mick Hancock's office, only Mac isn't there. But the other three are. Unfortunately he knows too well the routine in trying to interview the three grumpies when in a good mood. Now that mac has dropped them in the crap with his big gob (again)they are even less cooperative. However, uncle Will is riled enough that he lets loose a bit and covers nearly four pages with spleen venting. This bit sums it up - and I'm not sure there's still a large dose of this in the fuzz psyche. Its abit of a gem, as good as anything mac has ever come out with so I suggest it should be read out loud, preferably without prompts, next time you are in a public place - you know, like the god squad do in the market on saturday mornings.

Stardom does funny things to you. Changes people. But not us. Not really. And do you really want to know why? Good. I'll tell you. Its because us three, me, Pete, Les, we fucking hate this whole rigmarole. Just because some dick has bought one of our records that doesn't give him the right to come up to us in the street and start pestering us. Its nothing special, you know, making pop records. No more special than making a cabinet or running a sweet shop. No fucking big deal at all. So why can't people accept that and treat it as such? Why do we have to be placed on a pedestal all the time? I'm deadly serious here. I know you think I'm being naive, but I'm not. Why can't people like the music and then just fuck right off.

I knew he hated it. Then on his fotolog, he has a picture with some fans where he says he's looks really cheesed off about being recognized.

He refers to it as "the good ol' days." What a hoot.

I wonder if he gets pissed off about not being recognized these days?

I think that was the implication. At one time they were the kings of cool. You don't like being bothered until it's gone and then you wonder where it went.

I'd love to get my hands on that full article.
With the Force as his ally he did battle with the Dark Lord. And he showed the measure of a true Jedi at a place called "The Death Star" where hope for the Galaxy was reborn. May all who struggle against tyranny hold his memory in their hearts

I call bullshit. Those are Will's words? I am sure there are a few folks that if he met he'd go all ga-ga over.

Maybe his point should be that a lot of folks who helped record the music many find so amazing don't get the attention they deserve.

Well, it was in the book King of Cool, right?

OK, here's from Will's fotolog. In Never Stop there was a comment about them getting overwhelming amounts of attention in Japan.

With the number of interviews they have done, I am sure Will could feel one way one day and all together different another.

Friends and I met Will at a place called the Scrapyard when they were on the Reverberation Tour. The rest of the band took off pretty soon after the show, but Will stayed and talked. He was so kind. We were in our teens and he had no problem talking about about whatever, including the bands albums.

If you ever do, I'd like to read it too. .... there's a bit of the old punk ethos in his words ... about not putting a band on pedestals.

That's totally different than interviewers. Interviewers can be a pain. I've heard stories about Rob Zombie having his people send a press kit to answer questions rather than doing more interviews. He gets really cheesed off, Zombie does.

Will's interview behavior at one time could be really--well, about right for a teen, early 20s guy who really doesn't like to talk. They did have quite a bit to be cheesed off about from what I've read, LOL. If they didn't like an interviewer the Bunnies could be unkind--though an interviewer from Creem had some really good moments with them for the Buxton Pavillion/SHine So Hard shindig.

Isn't "cheesed off" a Bart Simpson expression?

Any experts on Bart Simpson? Will used the term. Thought it was British.
