I wonder if Les will take part in the song writing.

I play bass and so does Ricky but we needed a full-time dedicated bass-player for the first gig at Static Liverpool in July last year. My friend Will Sergeant suggested Les Pattinson but I thought he wouldn’t be remotely interested having just refused to re-join the Bunnymen for their Ocean Rain anniversary dates, but time was short, great bass players are thin on the ground in Liverpool and I thought what the hell and rang him at the boatyard where he works. I nearly fell off my chair when he said yes. Les is my oldest friend; our mothers actually introduced us to each other outside the infant school gates at the age of 4.



We literally grew up together; adjoining desks, sweets, toys, bikes, cigarettes, girls, Eric’s, guitars, births, marriages, deaths. When he quit the Bunnymen I didn’t see him for a long while so it’s been wonderful spending time with him again. I feel like something deeper is at work too. Who better to have at my side as I go over the top into no-man’s land than friends and old soldiers?

I would guess it is the same reason he didn't come back after Evergreen. Being treated as a session musician. What fun is that?

Or maybe it is just to sad to see a train wreck at the mic every night.

Those quotes make Les and Paul Simpson sound gay. Maybe that's why Les didn't return to the Bunnymen -- he was waiting for an offer to play in his boyfriend's band.

Les fought to get custody of his kids and that may have priority for him over anything else. Wild Swans is mostly a local gig. There are most likely no plans to go mega in America or engage in an intensive touring schedule. Plus, Paul Simpson seems like a dead nice guy to work with, doesn't he? He's always talking about how awesome everyone is to work with.

Personally, I can really hear the lack of Les. He played with passion and no one else does it for me basswise.

Of course you can really hear the lack of Les - just listen to Evergreen where the bass can be heard distinctively even if some of the songs are Electrafixion era. The bass on perhaps the greatest post-1997 Bunnymen song, Empire State Halo, helps make that song.
