It's that time of the year...........

We know there is more to life than the music of the Bunnymen. Talk about those other bands here.

I can barely remember what I purchased that came out this year the cds were generally so unremarkable. Really - I am a bitter man taking out my anger on my music collection.

The Xx - kind of like the Cure with really balnd vocals

Flaming Lips - Clearly warned it would be a lot more noise and "experimental" (ie half finished songs) it is ok - but bought into the hype.

Maps - It is ok - the lyrics really kill it and the breathy vocals don't appeal like they once did.

Girls - Good. Purposely under produced.

The Fountain - could be a career ender.

White Lies - should have bought a Visage reissue

Church - Untitled #23 - Really good.

The Horrors - meh

Metric - Fantasies - Good

Air Love 2 - Good album

Passion Pit - Manners - Loved it at first then wanted to hear my MGMT cd instead

Depeche Mode - A few songs are stand outs. The retro synths do not make for repeated listening.

Didn't buy and should have
Ian Brown's new one
Interpol singer's new one
The Big Pink
Muse
Roksopp

Didn't even realize they released something new
Editors
Placebo
Kasabian
Manic Street Preachers
Asobi Seksu - wait I did and it sounded boring

Just bought tickets for Wild Beasts March tour
Mr. Brian, I find that offensive.

Stinker of the year - KMFDM "Blitz"
With the Force as his ally he did battle with the Dark Lord. And he showed the measure of a true Jedi at a place called "The Death Star" where hope for the Galaxy was reborn. May all who struggle against tyranny hold his memory in their hearts

The Big Pink. One of the best. Nothing out of the ordinary - just good new wave music and on 4AD.

01 Jason Lytle - Yours Truly, The Commuter
02 Depreciation Guild - In Her Gentle Jaws (technically last year, but first physical release was this year)
03 The Legends - Over And Over
04 A Place To Bury Strangers - Exploding Head
05 Sonic Youth - The Eternal
06 The Flaming Lips - Embryonic
07 The Mary Onettes - Islands
08 White Lies - To Lose My Life
09 The XX - XX
10 The Big Pink - A Brief History Of Love
11 Pet Shop Boys - Yes
12 Editors - In This Light And On This Morning
13 Julian Plenti - Julian Plenti Is... Skyscraper
14 Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's Blitz
15 Silversun Pickups - Swoon

Think it's strange that the Interol lead singer and Editors both went in a beefier, dancier direction at the same time. Both were quite good - just strange that it happened like that.

Jesus, I am old. Reading the above lists, I'm almost sure that the only three 2009 albums I have bought are The Fountain, Morrissey's effort and Yellow6's "Merry 6mas 2009" (an annual ambient treat). I must have bought 100+ cds in the last 12 months but most are catch-ups / reissues / replacements that I've failed to buy until the last year, so here goes a top 15 of purchases from 2009 (no particular order).

The Wild Swans - Incandescent
Patti Smith - Horses
The Velvet Underground & Nico (Deluxe Edition)
Echo & The Bunnymen - The Fountain (I love "Everlasting Neverendless")
Captain Beefheart - Trout Mask Replica
Pere Ubu - Raygun Suitcase
John the Postman - Puerile
The Brian Jonestown Massacre - Strung Out in Heaven
Television - Marquee Moon
Datblygu - The Peel Sessions
The Soft Boys - 1976-81
The Residents - Third Reich 'n' Roll
Morrissey -Swords (for "Christian Dior")
Yellow6 - Merry 6mas 2009
13th Floor Elevators box set (still can't bring myself to break the cellophane, but I know the contents are classic!).
