Right...have finally seen The Golden Compass
Its...OK. Nowhere as near as good as LOTR but way better than the hideous Narnia film. Dakota Blue Richards showed real promise. My 8 year old liked it, my 11 year old (who has read the book) thought it was a complete turn off.
Me and Mrs Scouser (His Dark Materials converts) were let down by the screenplay. Too much has been compromised for mass market appeal, which has backfired on New Line because it hasnt done that well in the US. Peter Jackson kept the complexities of LOTR in the script which didnt do those films any harm.
The film eneded too soon for me...the death of Roger at the hands of Asriel is a real shocker in the book and would have wetted the apitite for the final two films. This ending looks like New Line have hedged their bets in case 2 & 3 dont get made. Which is a shame as Id love to see The Amber Spyglass on the big screen (directed by Peter Jackson).
Which leads to the issue of directors. The American Pie bloke has done an OK job but he's not a big screen, fantasy director. His Dark Materials is an epic, its not Harry Potter, so the Director has to be a spot on appointment...
...in this case it wasnt.
Mr. Brian, I find that offensive.
Scouser's inability to se others' point of view is rather grating.
