"Post-punk Echo and the Bunnymen was due to play on the main stage at Irish Village tonight. However, the performance was pulled after lead singer Ian McCulloch failed to board a plane in the UK."

People still listen to De La Soul? What a pathetic group of losers.

Who still follows a band whose prime ended years ago?

That sentence is amazingly worded. It could be a simple explanation (i.e., the whole band didn't make the trip, yet Ian is singled out), but the mind goes right to the sinister! (My theory of rehab still holds, by the way. )

Did he had to stay and double check the tax code before boarding?

Maybe Ian kicked in the stall door when it was occupied by English DJ Kissy Sell Out and the altercation caused them to miss their flights. It's a good theory. They were both scheduled to appear.

I'm revising my rehab theory to he has swine flu.

Why not? The airlines won't let him board and the U.S. won't let him in. It all makes sense.

UAE's very scary drug laws
Posted by Mark Frauenfelder, February 8, 2008 2:59 PM | permalink
In January, I posted the news that a young man had been arrested in Dubai for carrying melatonin. This BBC article looks into the story, and serves up some other examples of the draconian drug laws in the United Arab Emirates.

Examples:

• A Swiss man "is serving a four-year jail term after three poppy seeds from a bread roll he ate at Heathrow airport were found on his clothes."

• A 43-year-old Englishman who had a cigarette stuck to his shoe was sentenced was sentenced to four years in prison for possession of 0.003g of cannabis, which I would imagine is a microscopic amount.

• Customs officers held a woman for eight weeks before she was able to convince authorities that her codeine pills were prescribed by her doctor for back pain.

According to BBC article:

"If they find any amount - no matter how minute - it will be enough to attract a mandatory four-year prison sentence.

"What many travellers may not realise is that they can be deemed to be in possession of such banned substances if they can be detected in their urine or bloodstream, or even in tiny, trace amounts on their person."

http://www.guardian.co.uk/travel/2008/j ... travelnews

The United Arab Emirates has emerged as the country with the longest list of banned substances, which include many commonly available drugs, such as codeine, and many well-known anti-depressants, which can lead to jail if unaccompanied by a doctor's written prescription. Dubai airport has recently installed new drug-sensitive equipment which can detect a trace of a drug on a shoe. Earlier this year, Fair Trials International (FTI) published a list of the drugs that could lead to terms of imprisonment in Dubai. Travellers carrying jet-lag medicine have been held. Even poppy seeds can result in a charge. Fifty-nine Britons were arrested in Dubai last year on drug charges.

"Ignorance is no defence," said Crowe. "It is very easy to come unstuck. The best advice is be sensible and do your research before you travel." In February, the BBC DJ Grooverider was jailed for four years for an amount of cannabis that would not have led to his arrest in the UK.

Ii have just gone through the process of getting a pharmeutical prodcut approved in dubai

it was the hardest one ever cos everything had to be certified by about 4 different poeple

they said nothing about documents having to be certified by Black Francis -- maybe that might be the new rule and that is why Mac did not board the plane

That's management's fault. My rates are reasonable (18 pack of Tecate), I'm easy to find (Home Depot parking lot) and I do good, fast work.

If Ian failed to board the plane, I wonder what happened to the rest of the band? Did they fly out earlier, are they now stuck in Dubai waiting for their return flight, were they sitting on the plane wondering where the hell Ian was?

After reading some of that I don't think I'd want to be a musician traveling to Dubai.

Dubai is supposed to be a cool. Maybe they'll just do some sight-seeing.
