I wouldn't say obtuse - just falling into the tired belief nothing was happening on this side of the pond. When just a recod store, Rough Trade filled their bins with albums bought in the U.S. while visiting. Both sides fed off of one another for ideas and inspiration. New Order's trip to the clubs in New York City is what sparked the whole Hacienda thing.

Here - go to you library or go to Amazon and buy this used for 3 bucks.

I actually just ordered that. Should be a fun read though it doesn't do much musical analysis. I live in the LA area, there was plenty going on out here. Most of the cool stuff was on KROQ. Besides, Van Halen started up around here playing high school dances while the Bunnymen were playing at Eric's in Liverpool. Nikki Sixx got kicked out of my high school. Our little VH did well for themselves, but I still prefer the Bunnymen. The stuff coming over from Europe was more interesting to me, though I still bought a Ramones CD. Besides, the Bunnymen have listed a few Americans among their influences, the most obvious being the Doors (though we should all be glad Mac didn't turn out like Morrison).

Ah, don't forget the Velvet Underground in those American influences. And for what it's worth, my brother said the Bunnymen reminded him of Talking Heads.

And if you really like Rip It Up and Start Again, and are so inclined, Simon Reynolds has a website loaded with footnotes to his book ... http://ripitupandstartagainbysimonreynolds.blogspot.com/

I think you might be off for the thinking Teardrop Explodes is cool. ;)

Right now I'd far rather buy a new Cope release than a Bunnymen release. And Cope's books are great, even the Beeb used Krautrocksampler in their (shitty & patronising so far) Krautrock documentary.
The Teardrops were great. Cope's great. and that's a strong Bunnymen contingent in that video... Les, Jake, I think Pete..

Reynold's book is tremendous stuff if a tad portentious.

As for USA influences, I'd say they were (along with the 2nd hand Kraut-isms pedalled by Bowie/Eno/early Roxy) the driving force in UK post-punk. Velvets, Television, Patti Smith, Talking Heads, Devo, NY Dolls, Pere Ubu, Ramones, Nuggets, Elevators etc etc

That's another debt I owe the Bunnymen. I bought much of the above over the years, some due to having read of their influence on the Bunnymen and the Teardrops in particular and discovered stuff that I might not have searched for otherwise and some absolute classics of course.

You gotta hear them live man!

Anytime I hear that line I politely excuse myself then run.
With the Force as his ally he did battle with the Dark Lord. And he showed the measure of a true Jedi at a place called "The Death Star" where hope for the Galaxy was reborn. May all who struggle against tyranny hold his memory in their hearts

God knows I tried. I even left copies of the first four albums at his house -- plus Television's first album -- but he just didn't bite. His loss.

Have you read "Turquoise Days"? A good hop thru Bunny World.

Not going. I don't miss FB solo shows ever but I'm not overly interested in hearing Doolittle in its entirety. If they put out a new album though I wouldn't miss it for the world.

Just ordered it, LOL! I also just got Crystal Days in the mail. The plastic CD holders fell out as the glue seems to have lost it's stick. I'm alright with it and just put them in my Caselogic folder right after Ocean Rain. I thought the book would be cheesy, but it's really quite nice. Will comes across as a really level-headed guy. I love how he kept his job even after the first Bunnymen single came out.
