I only listened to the 1987 "gray album" for the first time last night, however, I've heard many of the songs in their recorded live performances from 1987. I throughly enjoyed it. Although many believe this is their worst album released with the original lineup, I suspect there are those out there that would now rate it higher in light of their more recent releases. Yes, no?

Although I didnt think it in 1985...but The Grey Album now sounds like a an absolute work of genius compared to pretty much everything that came after. Certainly anything post WAYGTDWYL.
Mr. Brian, I find that offensive.

Scouser's inability to se others' point of view is rather grating.

I've always preferred it to Evergreen. How did you get a copy two years before anyone else?

They made a big mistake in not playing more of the album live.....maybe the band think it stinks as well.....

I'd have liked to have heard Everlasting Neverendless and Shroud of Turin live.

But is there anything as fantastic as SuperMellowMan on The Fountain?

Hmm... Flowers v The Fountain... let me think.. (scratches chin thoughtfully)

Burn For Me or The Idolness of Gods?
Burn For Me

An Eternity Turns or Proxy?
An Eternity Turns

Supermellow Man or Do You Know Who I Am?
Supermellow Man

Think I Need It Too or It's Alright?
I'll leave it there thank you

Difficult one to call.

Not a classic, but I quite like the song - especially those weird reversed noises in the middle of the song (the bit where Mac sings "No one ever broke the bough, the cradle fell anyhow, there's angels in the thunder clouds, above"). Better bits on the instrumental version. Certainly much better live. If I recall, they speeded it up.

Flowers was not a very good album in general, but I did like some of the spooky effects and guitars on it - I guess due to Will being given a bit more freedom than usual. Much of it was ruined by poor production and some of the songs seemed to go nowhere when the verses sounded good. I prefer it to The Fountain though.

Did anyone see this Pitchfork review? I got the link from the Toronto show review.

http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/13592-the-fountain/#

""Proxy" is a pleasant surprise, going outside the band's usual box to scare up a piano-driven pop tune with breathy "whoa-oh-oh" backing vocals-- it's infectiously happy, not something you can say about many songs by this band, and if I were choosing, it'd be the next single."

What? Is this guy on crack?

I didn't care for his review anyway - this is harsh:
"Ultimately, The Fountain is an echo of an echo, inessential to all but the band's most devoted followers."
"It should be dark in here...the opposite of light"

No one wants to hear this, but Proxy is the best song on the album. (I'm ducking from the pots and pans being thrown at me.) It should be the next single and it would sell. It's far more infectious than TINIT.

By the way, The Idolness Of Gods is the "worst" song on the album. Gak.
