From what I've heard so far, sounds like the orchestrations of Soft Bulletin with the compressed drums and distorted guitar of Priest Driven Ambulance and Clouds Taste Metallic. With a whole take on vocals by Coyne.


Shops are all sold out. I am psyched to get this.

"For us, making a double record means that there's more room to be strange," Coyne said. "When [you] are making a very precise ten or eleven tracks, you want a really focused mood with an arc in it. Whereas I think with a double record, you're allowed to be abstract, freaky and unfocused – and that appealed to us. We really wanted to have the songs overtake us."

The result is a more "groove"-focused album that fans, Coyne warned, "might not even recognise [as the Flaming Lips]". Alongside cameos by Karen O and MGMT, there are also contributions from a "weird mathematician guy from Germany". He does "some spoken word stuff", Coyne advised.

I have not been thrilled with the material I've heard so far but it sounds like these songs need to be heard in context and not like Do You Realize or Yoshimi where there is a standout song.

Don't get me wrong, I've heard their other stuff but apart from bits of Yoshimi it doesn't do much for me really.

Their sound for awhile was overly compressed drums giving them this big raucous sound. Then they went the way of Mercury Rev's All Is Dream. Dave Fridman, producer at Tarbox Studios seems to play a big role.

Now the vocals are still in line with Soft Bulletin and Yoshimi but the drums, guitars and volume are at early rock out levels.

They seem to be the Pink Floyd of their generation. B-Movie style.

Steven Drozd is the real genius behind the Lips right now. That guy is so multi-talented it's amazing. Maybe he is the David Gilmour to Wayne Coyne's Roger Waters? It wouldn't be The Flaming Lips without Coyne but I think the Lips would have ended years ago if Drozd didn't come along.

Yeah I've always felt Drozd was the secret ingredient to the Lips. They really hit their stride after he joined. Someone in the Lips documentary said his heroin abuse was tolerated so long cause he could still produce great stuff even while strung out.

Drozd - That is the impression I got from the "Freaks" Movie. Had he succumbed to haeroin Coyne would be out of business. Well - would not be the big thang he is. I got the impression Coyne was more worried about dying for his own career than for Drozd.

Even more amazing...I also learned from that article that there is a Ricardo Montalbán Theater in LA. Nice. I wonder if the seats are made from fine Corinthian leather? There should also be a tattoo place next door.
