classic british comedies - on the telly

and did anyone see the series ade edmondson did recently? It started as a radio comedy and that was pretty dire so how it got on the telly i dont know. The 'situation' in the comedy was middle aged bloke, kicked out by the wife goes to live with his two kids who happen to be students - as if that would happen - eh - brother and sister at the same uni share a flat and then their dad moves in. But to top it all their other flatmate is a chinese student and theres lots of comedy about his accent - echoes of that 'mind your language clip i put up. the main thrust is ades midlife crisis, endlessly going on about punk bands, how wild they were and how dull todays students are. and yet i watched most of it so that says alot. i'll see if i can find it.

good one - and it fits in well with its occasional reliance on racial stereotypes and embarrassment about the sexy stuff. one of the few series that didn't outstay its welcome whilst pre-empting the comedy of embarrassment and cringe such as the office (UK, not seen the other) & saxondale. but mostly because its funny eh? I'll shut up now.

and since this is a sort of liverpool oriented web site nobody's mentined the carla lane stuff - liver birds & bread - neither of which did much for me, and the ones with women sitting arund talking to each other which i dont think i got, well not n the way blokes sitting around talking to each other struck a chord. Mind you the fat bloke from bread turns up in all sorts of stuff, from the scouse bloke in Lockstock and a fat paedophile who was topped whilst eating an apple in 'The Fixer' the other week, to nicholas lyndhursts sidekick in that one where he travels back in time to have it off with the lovely dervla kerwan (and why wouldn't you if you got the chance). i seem to remember that started off dodgy, got good-ish as you got used to the characters and then went a bit barmy. mind you it was streets ahead of that other one rodders was in where he lives with the mother in law when his wife fucks off to africa with her boyfriend (and also starred the girly who used to be tracey beaker).

I grew up with that show waiting for 120 Minutes to come on Sunday nights. Aside from Monty Python that is all we were getting on my tv in the early 90s.

I used to harbour carnal thoughts of Felicity Kendal when I was younger, pity she seems a bit up her own arse these days.

Probably 80s - but I was too young then to notice.
