Reminds me of my least favorite NO album Technique.

Why can't he go back to synth disco?

Actually, the answer from a big fan is Stephen Morris and Gillian were the two really responsible for NO's sound.

Morris apparently plays with Bad Lieutenant live, but is not a "studio" member:

Totally off topic, but Stephen Morris is one of the few drummers who rates as high as Pete. Wish he'd do more "traditional" drumming and ditch the electronic kit.

though funnily enugh mojo also gave this album 2 stars and the review was entirely about the issue to which you allude with passing mention of the music. Hooky's in town next week signing his book. dunno if i can be bothered queuing up though. hmm.

bits of the album sound like the last two NO albums but others sound like Embrace or someone. good artwork as you'd expect from sumner, and even some of the music. ho ho. they are supporting Petshop Boys on their tour apparently.
